My guess is we targeted Gordon for the long term Koenig role. I get it. The only fallback to this deal is Yoho is probably a casualty again. Not sure how much more he has to prove in AAA.

This seems like a trade that doesn't really have much downside. The only downside would be the potential whomever we remove from the 40 man ends up going on to contribute to another team down the road and we get nothing from the two we picked up. I don't think this will prohibit any other deals. I seriously doubt they'd have made this deal if they felt they were interested in someone better that will now be cost prohibitive.

What we get is someone who could eat a few innings even if he sucks while doing it and a little back of the bullpen depth. The benefit of doing so well up to know allows a couple game cushion to try something like this. I doubt they're going to risk too many games if either one of them implodes early on. They aren't going to patiently wait for them to figure it out like they are Sproat.

If we only are paying around 2 million, then this makes more sense.

Yeah, 2M and Fielder is fine for 2 lottery tickets (one with many years of control). If one of them hits - great. If not, whatever.

Obviously you can't make decisions based on this, but I agree it sucks that Fielder and Sabathia were excited about being able to play together and now not so much.

Maybe we should've included Sabathia in the deal.

Doubtful either will end up in the bigs here, but this timing sucks.

hate hate hate this trade

Is it fair to say that if the Brewers traded random 21 year old low A undrafted player batting .233 in this deal and his last name wasn't Fielder you wouldn't be as mad.

Turns 22 in August.  Batting 9th, with no defensive home. UDFA.

In other words, the definition of a non-prospect.

Taking on Jordan Montgomery’s salary to get Shelby Miller with no minor league talent going back to Arizona was brilliant outside the box thinking.

Think back to when they traded for CC Sabathia they gave up Michael Brantley and other prospects. Brantley went on to be a 300 hitter across 15 seasons and made five All-Star teams.

With free agent salaries what they are today the Brewers simply aren’t going to trade that caliber of prospect anymore so these type of outside-of-the-box deals and minor acquisitions to improve the talent floor are most likely all we’re gonna see going forward.

Cleveland traded for Matt LaPorta ... Brantley was a "throw in" who just happened to become a great MLB player.

LaPorta's father-in-law is a good friend of mine (he pastors a church just north of Tampa). Unfortunately, LaPorta never "hit" a an MLB player, but he was a dynamic HR hitter at Florida when drafted by Milwaukee.

Yoho is light years better than Kuhnel & Koenig ... hope he stays in Milwaukee throughout the season. I understand our starting pitching is impacted by rest for Miz & a minor (I pray) injury with Harrison, but Bryce Wilson is a "short-term" solution at best.

Just because he was the PTBNL, doesn’t make him a throw in. Was the 2nd biggest piece of the trade, and they were simply going back and forth between Brantley and Green (who were 7/8 in brewers system -https://www.brewcrewball.com/2008/6/26/559111/breaking-down-the-prospect) to be included.

Ironically; making the playoffs is what made it Brantley rather than Green. That gave Cleveland the decision, and if MKE missed playoffs, it would’ve been their decision and they’d have shipped off Green.

I'm not even considering Kuhnel going forward. He was awful. I just don't think they'll DFA Koenig to make room on the 26 man nor Wilson as they need another long man in the BP after using Patrick so much 1st half. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Yoho is indeed on the roster this weekend or whenever McCullers and Gordon are officially up.

If we’re kicking in only $2 million, I’m less concerned.

and to your point about Fielder , you’re right.  If his name was Jones, I wouldn’t care

Yeah I hope we can trade every one of our DH only A ball guys who is treading water for a 5yr of control AAA pitcher and a vet. No offense to Jadyn at all and I hope he makes it someday.

But this is just very good asset management.

One additional home playoff game pays for this entire scenario.

Yeah, Brantley was no throw in. When the deal was being kicked around & LaPorta was rumored, I remember just hoping the deal could be put together w/o Brantley being included. You'd think including Zach Jackson could've prevented that haha.

As to this deal, Houston kicked in some cash & we kicked in someone with a very, very small chance of climbing our prospect lists or ever making it up here. This is worth rolling the dice on because it's pretty much a free roll.

How about the Astros eat the rest of Yelich’s contract and we will send them Blake Burton as a sweetener

Who is Blake Burton?

Could be, unless Koenig gets ILed again at some point. His velo just isn't there.
