Agreed, but that doesn't excuse this trade.

We got fleeced by a division rival for two players we already have on the roster.  One of which is on the IL for the next two weeks minimal.

The FO made a mistake, it's ok to admit it and still be a fan of the Brewers and their front office.

You said this: "This trade destroys any confidence I have in the Brewers front office."

That's just a biiiit more overreactionary than saying you don't like the trade. A tad.

It stings but May is a great fit plus they get a lefty reliever.

Skubal cost a fair amount more. Hope is doing in AA what you dream Frias will do there at the same age. A fair outcome for River Ryan is a healthy/productive Dustin May. And Detroit got an additional fantastic young pitcher to boot.

It's working pretty well so far. Take a step back from the ledge for a couple minutes.

What’s working?    The negative runs given up per game. 😀

It's possible teams evaluate prospects differently, isn't it? We're not talking about crude oil, where there's a price based on tons of daily transactions. People pay different prices because everyone has their own evaluation systems, their own scouts, and their own computer models.

I am plenty aware that there is probably 60-70% chance that neither of Frias or Ragsdale ever amount to much at the MLB level.

However, we are not the kind of organization that can afford to walk away from the 10% chance that one of them becomes a star for non controlled and non elite rentals.

Yes, it’s true that different organizations rank prospects and players differently.

But pretty much every prospect list, Fangraphs, baseballtradevalues, etc are in agreement that this was a bad deal.

Are you seriously not only using one stat like complete games to put pitchers in one group

BrewerFan... c'mon.

No.

It's complete game shutouts.

Are you seriously saying that May isn't a very good pitcher?  Did you not see him put up 7 no-hit innings against us?

Relax.  Can we give this a while and see how this shakes out?

Sproat has to go to the pen or minors now, right? With May in the rotation and getting Harrison back, I think they go with a 6 man rotation for now and Gasser stays.

I’m definitely not a fan of the return in this trade, but this front office has proven time and again that they know what they are doing. I know trade deadline trades have been an Achilles Heel for our Front Office, but there has been so much more good than bad that I can’t automatically say this is a bad trade.

Poor asset management by the crew imo.  What's funny is they could have signed May this offseason for less than they paid woo to come back from an injury almost no one has come back from.  Not great.  On a more positive note I like the players they picked up.

I saw him give up 6 runs in 2 innings against a terrible Royals offense.  Doesn't make him a bad pitcher, just like him no hitting our offense for 7 innings doesn't make him a very good pitcher.

Should be in the minors.

Going to an instead division rival is what makes this bad.   For minimal upside and what could a very very large downside makes it dumb.

Might be an idea to see how these new additions play for us before deciding the trade was bad. May looks decent to me when I’ve seen him the other fella I don’t know about

It was a hot take.  I'm probably the only one in this thread to be guilty of a hot take today...

I think many of the prospect-huggers on here (I love them, too) are underestimating the developmental risk associated with Frias (and to a lesser extent, the plug-and-play Ramsdale). Not their ceilings, or where they should rank on lists, because I think they're dynamite prospects, too. And this isn't to say that it isn't an overpay, because it looks like there could have been better deals to be had. But I think that there are so many prospects that hit the big leagues, and perform a little bit, but then regress to being JAGs.

Been going though some other trades and this one feels like an overpay compared to Mize and Peralta but the Cubs gave up a lot for Holmes so that balances it out a bit.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Not getting a bat or two is the real crime today. Nothing else really matters in the end. The Dodgers have good pitching and come playoff time we will need hitting.

Yup, this is pretty painful. I’m ok with trading away Ragsdale. Frias is a player I would’ve wanted to keep. That’s a tough one.

I was thinking the reverse.  Frias has loads of potential, but Ragsdale is hammering in AA.  But...its possible the Brewers are selling high.  We'll see.

Yeah.    After what transpired today.   I’d rather we overpaid for hitters.    That would actually move the playoff needle.

and that’s coming from someone who would have been ok if we did nothing

That doesn't connect at all, though.

Maybe the Brewers like May and Romero a lot more than Gausman. Maybe the Blue Jays valued what they got from the Cubs really highly. Maybe the Brewers are just not that high on Frias and Ragsdale.

It's fine to THINK we gave up too much. But the certainty with which some folks have pronounced it is a big red flag that undercuts their take. I promise you, most big-league GMs are very fluent in uncertainty and very aware that the error bars around prospect evaluations are massive.

It absolutely connects. There's nobody who genuinely believes it doesn't connect. There's not a person on here today who knows a thing about the Brewers prospect who would have said, "Ragsdale and that 18-year-old with the 117 exit velo's who's 6'2 and still filling out and on a similar trajectory as Chourio, give STL THOSE two players(or ALL players) for a nice solid starter and an injured reliever.

Not a person would have been doing the 'well maybe team A valued Johnny at this level but Team B Valued him a this level so I guess we can't be sure.'

It's annoying we made this trade. It was out of character and it was obviously the Brewers panicking... it's SOOO much more annoying to see the intellectual dishonesty and see how dumb people can play about this.

Finally, I'm not sure what the hell "I promise you, MOST big-league GMs are very fluent in uncertainty  and very aware that the error bars around prospect evaluations are massive."

You're promising ME that "Most" GMs(big league ones) are fluent in uncertainty.
Do you know which ones are NOT fluent? Also, since this an appeal to an authority, but mostly in a "well if they did it, then they know," type of appeal to authority, do you care to share with me what unique insight you have into the mindset of GMs and can you also tell me which are NOT fluent in uncertainty.

Ok, I hate this trade as much as the Trojan's hated Helen after she told the Prince to accept that gift horse and not look in it's mouth(that's just basic history)...

BUT... May is not a below average starter. He's an extremely talented started who... I would VAGUELY understand if he were under team control, but he's not below average. It's either a Gm2 or Gm3 starter.

Further, May has a 3.48 ERA in 14 post- season innings. He is their most experienced playoff pitcher (Miz 12 IP, Ashby 9 IP, Patrick 9 IP, Uribe 7 IP, Megill 7 IP,  Hall 3 IP, Gasser 2.2 IP, Harrison 0 IP, Henderson O IP, Drohan 0 IP, Sproat 0 IP)

One thing is true that stands out today the Cubs think they can catch the Brewers. They are all in and Brewers will have to really get it going to hold them off.

Here's the story I tell myself to make it feel better:

Offense has been up like crazy in the minors this year, whether because of the ball, the weather, or something else, who can tell? Biloxi looks more like El Paso in the box scores. Thus it's likely that some of the offensive prospects are putting up numbers that would be difficult to sustain. Perhaps this is a good time to capitalize on higher than expected values for hitters who might come down to earth at some point.

Doesn't meant I don't hate the deal, I actually really do. (Cursed out load as I was reading mlbtr, causing some nearby humans to raise eyebrows), but I have to assume that if Frias really looked like a Caminero-to-be to the people who see him most and know him best, they'd not include him in a deal for a rental arm or two.

Maybe that helps?

So the Brewers FO "obviously" panicked? How could you possibly know that unless you were in the room with them?
