Are the Rockies Unstoppable?

Winning 19 of their past 20... four postseason games in a row (including 3 on the road). This team is on a roll. While I have a certain loyalty to the Arizona Diamondbacks (my boss's son plays for their AA team), I really don't envision how the Diamondbacks get past the Rockies right now. Maybe the Rockies are hyped, or the nation has "Rockies Fever", but I think they might go all the way this year.

 

Good or bad, as many have indicated about the Wild Card System, modern MLB now dictates that it is better to be white hot at the end of the season that win 95 games during a dominating regular season.

The Rockies are definitely white hot right now. I agree that it seems like it's better to have a mediocre season and finish hot, then just have a good season and go into the playoffs "warm", if that makes sense.

I think that's a misconception. Look at the Cardinals last year, they were all but hot going into the playoffs.

The Phillies disagree with the Hotness Hypothesis. So do the 2001 Diamondbacks. For the most part, September winning percentages tend to be close to a team's overall record, which would just show that the better the team, the better they tend to do in playoff action. I'm sure there are exceptions in both directions.

I've seen studies that showed it really doesn't matter, at least not to any measurable degree.

I think so far as "hot = all your best players are healthy and performing at 100%" there is an advantage.

It is very unprobable, but i think its also within reason that the Rockies might go 11-0 in the playoffs (12-0 if you count the play in game). That would mean that they close the season on a 26-1 pace! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/eek.gif

I'm pulling for them and the Indians in the WS. The Rockies and Indians fans have been very loyal for a long time without much to show for it. Granted the Indians were great in the 90's but they never got the ring. AZ is a nice story team wise but they have a title and their fans don't really deserve another IMO.

Since the Brewers (especially Tony Gwynn) put the Rockies in this position anyway, it's real easy to adopt them this postseason, although it'll be interesting watching Doug Davis face them as well.

The 2007 Rockies appear to be an exception to the norm--everything came together at exactly the right time for a once in a decade hot streak.

 

With the marginal talent in the NL and all of the Rockies players playing exceptional baseball all at the same time, there isn't any stopping them. The Diamondbacks don't belong, just like the Bears didn't belong in the Superbowl. It catches up eventually.

 

That being said, the Rockies will eventually cool off. A few dominating pitching performances and some bad luck and they could lose in the World Series, especially with the pitching that the Red Sox/Indians have.

One of the TBS broadcasters said the Rockies have been sprinkled with 'fairy dust'. Actually, both of these teams have been sprinkled. As things seem to stand, the Rockies look to be a better team with a larger and more recent dose of fairy dust.

rockies are clearly in the drivers seat now. after beating webb on the road, they have a good chance at rolling into the WS.

I believe the NBA does the 2-2-1-1-1 format, but i'm not positive.

Last year Detroit and St. Loius were the worst of the post season teams in the last month of the season. Both pretty much limped nto the post season.

Tonight is probably Arizona's best chance to salvage a game of this series with Hernandez on the mound unless they bring Webb back on short rest in game 4. Even then, the Rockies won't lose until game 2 of the World Series.

their pitching has been really good in the post season, and their d is really really impressive. they field balls and turn double plays that the crew would have no shot at fielding or turning
