In my old job I frequently had to put together briefs on the Cubs and Cardinals or write road gamers when our local minor league team was visiting Appleton. Other than not having to double check the spelling of the Timber Rattlers’ names, being a Brewers fan didn’t affect things any differently than if I was a fan of the Mariners or Marlins. If you’re good at what you do with the writing and are willing to acquire the requisite knowledge about the other team, fandom shouldn’t matter.

There is a very large difference between that and having a Cubs fan write an article on a Brewers site about Counsell leaving the Brewers for the Cubs.

I could see your point if the article was in some way biased in favor of the Cubs.

It's just incredibly tone deaf. Brewer fans don't want to hear from a cub fan about Counsell going to their team.

This is a Brewers site, there are several other writers to write articles about it

I agree about this specific article, but probably for a different reason. Honestly, at that point, the interesting part was the emotion (at least in the main portion of the story). If it could be done without coming across as gloating, writing it from a Cubs’ fan perspective about the emotion of the day would have actually been more interesting. As it was, it reminded me of an editor who said that sometimes you need to write a 500-word headline, a story where all the information is in the headline, but it is important enough where you have to make the story 500 words long anyway to avoid looking like you’re ignoring it.

But, following up my previous comment, my initial thought of an article on this was about how the flattening of baseball organizational charts led to the decrease in manager power and salary that the Cubs bucked, so I am not someone to look to for advice on reaching a broad audience.

Money spent does not equal championships won either. A team that gets to the playoffs the most have the best chance of winning one over a team that doesn't. If that hasn't been demonstrated amply enough after this post season I don't know what to say. I have shown that both teams are about equal overall and the Brewers are far ahead of late in getting there. For you to say the Cubs have a better chance of winning a World Series in the near future while completely ignoring the last five years of actual production is ignoring all available evidence. Like for instance they've had more resources for the past five years and have failed to outperform the Brewers in four of them. The only time they didn't was in the covid year. Frankly I think you're just arguing to argue now.

You are going to gloss over the market size and payroll size of World Series winners…aren’t you?

That is so over the top ridiculous but thats the type of hyperbole you get from big market teams and why Counsell will forever get booed by his former hometowns fans.

this might blow your minds but... a) you can be a fan of more than one team and 2) you can be a fan of a team and still objectively write about a rival team.

2) Sure, you could, but he doesn’t. His article are often filled with explaining how Brewers fans feel (LOL) and labeling it as ‘we’ when talking about Brewers fans or the team.

But it really doesn’t matter. The articles aren’t intended to be good, it is about clicks…it is why we had to endure articles in the forum section despite everyone not wanting them there. The writing is usually atrocious, though it looks like some of the forum post level stuff has been weeded out. Still, no one bothers to proof read them even once, it appears.

If Brock ever opens up a proofreader job, I may be game though. I may even agree to write if he trades Matthew back to the Cub’s forum.

But end of rant, it’s a bit off the intended Counsell conversation.

I hate it, hate it, hate it, but that is actually considered correct apostrophe usage now.

People say these types of things but it’s not true. There’s always a #1 favorite.  Just like dating 2 girls at the same time; one eventually beats out the other as your favorite.

Well…then they still screwed up. As the Brewers’ is incorrect then. :)

The most surprising thing is him being naive about staying in WI. I mean he can by right, but it will never be the same. He doesn’t see himself as the bad guy even though he has done the bad guy things. And he can’t talk his way out of it, which will be new to him.

You know the salt levels are really high when the guys with the pitchforks and torches turn their baleful eyes on the guy that writes articles nobody makes them read.

Congrats to the Cubs and Counsell. I look forward to beating them annually.

I am already cringing at the new round of rancor that will be hurled @Matthew Trueblood's way. At the same time...

Chicago isn't new York in terms of sports media scrutiny...but the Cubs' organization and fans aren't those loveable losers anymore either and that town can be brutal on a baseball team that fails to live up to expectations.  CC hasn't dealt with that kind of environment as a manager or as a player, so it will be interesting to see how he handles that, because he doesn't come off as an A type personality that enjoys being in the headlines (good or bad)

I'm not exactly sure what the Cubs should be expected to do just because they paid a guy to manage them close to double what the average mlb player salary currently is.  Obviously a whole offseason of more changes, but right now they might be the 4th best team in the division if people assume the cards 2023 season was an aberration.

I'm a Counsell fan.  His decision to sign with the Cubs surprised me.  I wonder if this is a case of Craig realizing he's done all he can do with this team and organization and wants to take his skills to the next level?  Does he have unfulfilled career goals as a manager (World Series) and is making this move to achieve those career goals?  Is this a case of "quiet quitting" that we all hear about in the work world, and this is his chance to move on?  Currently, I don't have any strong emotions going either way.

This is something I've meaning to post, but never got around to it.  Didn't know if it deserved its own thread.  I lived through the Bambi's Bombers/Harvey's Wallbangers era where the Brewers were an AL powerhouse.  Looking at the records the last six season, this current run almost matches it.  People still gloss over the '82 team, I wonder if people will remanence regarding the recent teams?

'78-'83: 93, 95, 86, 92*, 95, 87 wins = 91 average

'18-'23: 96, 89, 78*, 95, 86, 92 wins = 89 average
