I’ve always liked the dude, just not the player. As such, I’m sorry he’s hurt (goes without saying, I would be in any event), glad he got some money for his trouble, and also glad this all but surely closes the book on his time as a player in Green Bay. Hope he makes a full and complete recovery.

Now watch pass pro become a complete nightmare without him as I eat my words…

That's the one area he's really good. Picking up blitzers and as a receiver out of the backfield, he's also better in open space...which is counterintuitive.

As a general rule of process and results: Don't draft kickers. Really don't draft kickers with career 71 % FGM track records.

Most College Kickers either have poor FG% or they don't really attempt any longer FGs. I think even Tucker was a guy who didn't start for a few years and only had a ~83% FG% at Texas.

Joseph was under 70%...so was Crosby at Colorado and then there was that incredible kicker from FSU Aguayo hit...like 30 in a row when FSU was great the last time and was awful.

Kicker's a weird position where it's tougher to project to the NFL than most people would probably think. Moody was a guy I really wanted, but SF used a 3rd on him and he was great at Michigan...but terrible away from Michigan(or at least not good).

Every year we fear that our TC darling that gets cut will be claimed... but very few do.  I guess we will see. Bad day to be a 7th round pick (Pratt, Johnson, Dubose, King).

Sure, that always happens, but I really don't understand the DBs. They have to be REALLY confident in Stokes and not high on Johnson or King. Anderson is the exact type of guy who I would think you could have cut, put on the PS and then activated if he was that important to the success of the STs. I also have trouble believing he's that much better on STs than Johnson in particular who looked really good covering kicks(plus the scoop and score, though that was more right time/place).

I would be surprised to see both the CBs back.

WR, Heath is another guy who's really good on STs, but Dubose looked good as well.

Pratt doesn't sound like he's going to be invited back. That seems extreme to me for reasons I mentioned, but I'd guess practice plays as big of a role a the games.

Otherwise, nothing to shocking. Mosby and Cox making it is a little surprising, but they always have at least one position like that.

Been that way for a long time, too. Older Packer fans will remember the Packers drafting a kicker in the 3rd, I think his name was Brett Conway, who eventually got beat out by undrafted free agent Ryan Longwell, who went on to have a long and relatively successful career in Green Bay.

As a general rule it's probably better to avoid drafting kickers whatsoever. Or take one in the 7th when you've got a bunch of extra picks that won't make the team anyway. I think there's just a really high mental factor for NFL kickers that you just don't really know if a guy will have until you see. Tampa Bay took a great college kicker all the way up in the 2nd a few years ago I think and he was a total disaster.

I think Anders was a Rich B "that's my guy" pick.

I think he's going to replay that missed kick in San Francisco more.

I definitely replay that one more as a fan than a meaningless preseason game, but to Anders that kick was anything but meaningless.

Right now on a personal level, I would guess he's probably more concerned with the fact that he's unemployed and the kick that caused him to be unemployed, than he is with a playoff kick that he missed with the team that fired him.

Which kicker was it who started dating Holmgeen's daughter? He was left out of the team picture and cut the next year.

I'm surprised King didn't make it over Ballentine. Figured King had higher upside but I guessed they liked Ballentine's higher floor.

Have they kept this many DE in recent years?  Haven’t followed rosters closely but that seems heavy.

My guess is they try to sneak one through waivers later on.

Zayne Anderson over AJJ was probably my biggest surprise.

Ballentine over King wasn't too surprising.  He struggled to cover 2nd and 3rd string WRs, so maybe after a year on the PS.

The Packers have about $20M in cap space and there is no limit to how much they can pay practice squad players, so with that much cap space available maybe they have some handshake agreements with some guys they cut to come back at higher than practice squad minimums.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Carlson or another kicker picked up on the practice squad in addition to Hale as he is exempt.

Yeah, the TB kicker was FSU's Aguayo. He was great in College and hit big kicks...

Edit-Link about Aguayo

Quote

Roberto Aguayo, the most accurate kicker in NCAA history, could’ve rewritten the record books in the NFL.

He could’ve been mentioned in the same breath as Justin Tucker, Lou Groza, Morten Andersen, and George Blanda once he hung up his cleats.

Alas, fate had other ideas.

https://www.profootballhistory.com/roberto-aguayo/

We did have 13 picks in the Carlson draft and he was a 6th. We've also cut 5 of the last 8 picks in that draft now with Clifford, AJJ, Dubose, and Lew Nichols.

Cade York was another really good College Kicker drafted recently...it's just hit or miss, but a guy who has the physical ability and kicks a game-winner in the Iron Bowl, as big as THAT is down there... it's hard for me to get too upset about the pick.

That SF kick...you can't put that one on him. The FB was tiled away from him. He had plenty of chances to fix that...and the Packers have to have fixed their overall kicking unit.

I THINK they kept 12 DL to start the season...maybe 2 years ago? Maybe it was 3. But I thought in back to back years they kept 11 and 12 with one year Ford, Garvin, Tipa Galea...there's always at least one area they start out with a couple extra players and then with a little roster manipulation they get it in line.

Could want extra DL just for week 1 in Brazil or because someone is banged up. Mosby played great, but...so did AJJ.

It's not so much Ballentine OVER King, it's a 6th DE over King. And sure, he struggled, but when he was struggling, he was in the middle of the field with the 3rd team D playing man coverage. That's a hard cover for Jaire, Stokes or anyone.

But, they definitely tested him. I hope he's back. I know some thought he may be more of a 3rd safety/slot type and...this wasn't a good year to try and make the team in that role, but still.

Johnson Jr is still more surprising. I better see Anderson making a LOT of plays on STs as I saw Johnson blowing guys up on STs as well as filling in the run game.

They can give them a little more, but I thought there was a limit to how much they could give him. Veteran players could earn another ~10-15K a week, but they're capped out at ~380 for the season and that's for the veterans.

I know they just negotiated raises for PS players, but I thought it was capped based on service.

I don't believe so.  I know there was a guy a few years ago on the Packers PS who another team offered to sign to their active roster, so the Packers offered him a raise to league minimum salary and he stayed with the Packers on their PS.

There are minimums they have to pay based on service time, but I don't believe maximums.

Does anyone know when waiver claims get announced. Best i can find on google is P/S players can be signed starting at noon (est) today. I am then assuming that if the packers claim a kicker or another player, I'll know this AM?

Per the NFL website:
(Aug. 28) Claiming period for players placed on waivers at the final roster reduction will expire at 12:00 noon, New York time.

I saw this online a few days ago, these are the camp battles to watch for on the kicker front. Looking at it Narverson seemed the most intriguing based on who is probably going to be cut.

Welch & King unclaimed hopefully they ends up on the P/S.

Likely.  Welch being a WI native makes the Packers his best PS situation.  King most likely also.  Our best CB that was cut... so likely just depends on if he wants to be here.

I guess in this case, the devil you don't know is better than the devil you know?  Looks like Narveson didn't have that great of a training camp (by FG%)... slightly less than Carlson and Joseph actually (75%).

A few interesting tidbits in this Titans article about him: Tennessee Titans: Could they sneak Narveson onto the practice squad? (usatoday.com)

Now, context of those kicks is always a question (i.e. how many 50+yarders are included), but on the surface he looks to be equally inaccurate... but at least has a big leg. 😬

its a kicker, if he isn't great they can keep Greg Joseph on speed dial or one of the others cut yesterday.  In game situations he was 6/7 and made a 59 yarder. that means more to me that 75% during practice (what are we talking bout, practice? How silly is that)

Fair point. I wasn't finding his in-game numbers (and I agree their importance over practice).  I just figured I'd share that tidbit about him that I found.

Packers lose Grant DuBose to Miami.  I figured with his upside, he was more vulnerable than Malik Heath to being claimed, but alas... probably not a major loss.

Newman (why???) was claimed by Tampa, so at least we don't have to worry about him being an option to come back later.

AJJ goes to NYG to complete a swap of safeties between the club.  Hopefully Xavier is worth the extra $$$.

Interestingly enough... Taysom Hill (2017) was the last time we cut a player at the end of TC that was claimed by another team.
