Pretty interesting they have four SP heading into free agency after ‘25. If they fail to keep pace at least they will have an infusion of young talent coming in July 31st.

Maybe.  But if they fail to keep pace, it's probably because most of the aforementioned four SP have been not good, in which case how much talent do they really bring back via trade?  I think it's moot anyways.  I love our chances for 2025.

Three SP heading into FA after 2025, Freddy has an $8M team option for 2026.

Yep…….if not Freddy would have  either been extended or traded last winter

Guessing said person was counting Woodruff as a SP.

Nope, I meant what I wrote; there are four:

Woodruff

Cortes

Civale

Quintana

I love that you love our chances in 2025!  WE need more of that!

It’s a big year on the development side to see if we can start getting some young arms ready for ‘26 and beyond.

Gasser - will he recover from injury and adjust to a full time starting role

Hall -  can he take a step forward with consistency and reliability

Ashby - has been better in relief so can improve in a starting role

Mis - command

Henderson - not electric but knows how to pitch

KC Hunt - can he continue his ascent

Wichrowski - great arm but how long will his development take

So out of those seven guys, it’s a huge year to show the development needed to have at least a couple jump up and enter the rotation in ‘26.

When Burnes, Woody, and Freddy came up, they all had ups and downs for awhile and they were all high upside guys.  They took their lumps.  It’s natural to expect our young pitchers to need MLB adjustment similarly.

Henderson , Patrick, Misiorowski, Myers, Gasser.  We have more than enough waiting to move up to cover for lost pitchers.

I think they will find away to keep Woody again even if he has a good 2025 I do not think he makes himself unaffordable but we do not even know if he holds up through it all so I am not counting on him for anything beyond 2025 anyways.

Plus Chad Patrick .  Everyone forgets that guy .  I keep calling him Taylor for some reason and I watch him more than most.  So there is something that mentally blocks you from remembering the guy but he is a starter ready for work this season too.

I buried the lede but really like the Quintana signing.  I suppose I am overcompensating for how good he looks against us but this is a guy who has been reliable and knows how to pitch.  There’s been a sense that we needed more innings absorbed and JQ gives us a solid answer.  He can keep us in games and get us to the pen.

Starting pitchers always have trade value. It might not be much, but if the season blows up in their face, they’ll be able to trade all four of those players if healthy.

I wanted Quintana all off-season. You need 10 starters to get through a season. I probably would have overpaid him considering what he ended up getting.

Yes and at 36 just in Jan you can bet he will have a start every series against the Cubs.

Sorry they did that on Dec 20 2024

Wow, MLB Network is talking about it today like it is todays news.

Just really pleased with Quintana. I really wanted Miley back, but this is great too. Theoretically it re-establishes the floor of what the staff will do this year. The young arms are going to be needed at some point and it's exciting, but IF they implode this limits the number of innings in which they do so.

At this price this is a high five of a signing. Hopefully it all works out.

I like Quintana as the veteran, experienced arm more so than Miley or Rea

I’m not sure any team has as much pitching depth as Milwaukee

Several teams have greater talent … but no one has as many quality MLB pitchers as the Brewers

Great move, this is the type of move that makes other organizations look dumb. Kikuchi is making 21 million a year and Quintana has flat out been better than him the past 3 years. There are probably 5 or 6 pitchers that have gotten around 15 million a year or more that Quintana has been better than but because he throws 90-92 he won't get as much.

With this we have one of the deeper pitching staffs and now 6 guys who can be good enough to start playoff games, not counting prospects. It also allows us to go to a 6 man rotation when Woody comes back and save those arms a bit. I like moving Ashby back into the multi inning bullpen rile especially with the rough-ish start to spring.

He fell off pretty hard last year.

72 ERA- | 76 FIP- | 93 xFIP- in 2022.

85 ERA- | 81 FIP- | 102 xFIP- in 2023.

95 ERA- | 113 FIP- | 109 xFIP- in 2024.

2022 and 2023 were also aided by really good/lucky home run suppression (42 HR9+), but that caught up with him big time last year with a more appropriate 103 HR9+.

At the same time his last six regular season starts were ridiculous last year with 36 IP of 19 ERA- | 62 FIP- | 87 xFIP- and he followed that up with 0 ER over 11 IP in his first two postseason starts before the Dodgers finally got to him in the NLCS so hopefully there are another 170 or so IP of 95 ERA- left in the tank, as that shook out to 3.0 rWAR for Jose last year.

Maybe Hook will look under the hood and find some of the old magic.

The Brewers needed someone to eat some innings and that is what they got.  Realistically he is probably more of a #4 or #5 starter now.  Still a solid signing though it feels like the Brewers have been trying to acquire him since 2018.

It certainly is a weird turn of events where Frankie Montas gets 34 million guaranteed for 2 seasons, Andrew Heaney gets 5.5 million from the Pirates, and the best Quintana could apparently do was a 4.5 million guarantee from Milwaukee.

Montas might be the baby of the bunch at 31, but other than that it’s hard to argue that Quintana is not the best of those three SPs.
