Something is going on with Skenes.  Not sure what it is, is he just tired of the Pittsburgh grind, and a change in scenery will fix it?  Is there some kind of injury, or discomfort going on?

If he is 100% healthy, I'd consider Made straight up, but then again, I'd change my mind 10 minutes from now.

Imagine Miz, Skenes at the top of the rotation, then we grab Skubal at the deadline?

Miz, Skenes, and Skubal, with Harrison as our #4?

Ok, ok, I'm awake, I must have dozed off for a bit...

His velo is down about 2 mph from last year. Good one against the Braves last time out.

Not much prospect love for Burke in this thread. That's a head scratcher. I guess he is perceived as too "lumbering" maybe? Haven't checked his defensive assessments though, so maybe that's a knock? And everybody has Fischer as the darling 1B of the future instead maybe. I see Burke as the good contact for average, lower K rate, above average power better version of Vaughn. Make Fischer the DH of the future if he gets his K's down. The BIG BAT baton was handed from Braun to Yeli, and it's likely to be passed to Fischer.

I see them as insurance for each other. One of the two hits, we're good. They both hit... we'll have to find ABs for Burke the next couple years until he can take over at DH(by then maybe someone else steps in)... but I'd be in no rush to get rid of either one.

I'd say Fischer is far more likely to be the 1B of the future though. The RHer in Fischer and the lefty in Burke.

Man, talk about a kings ransom. But not while he's throwing 94. I think right now his value would be where Soto's was when he got traded.

Three years with Mis... we should be able to keep Made as well in theory, but the Pirates wouldn't trade with us. The pen also takes a huge leap as you have Sproat throwing maybe 2 innings out of the pen, maybe his stuff ticks up, Henderson, same thing.

That’s kind of the point. If the thread title is what prospects would you be willing to deal, the honest answer I  think is any of them if it’s the right deal.

…. although Turning2 would keep Made seemingly no matter what. 😃

Normally I'm on board with trading prospects for proven MLB players. I don't trust pitchers to stay healthy. There is probably a greater chance of Skenes getting injured than Made washing out.  If somebody was dumb enough to trade 3.5 controllable years of a proven/consistent 25-30 HR power bat (if such existed), I could be persuaded.

Fischer bats lefty

- I think Burke is more likely to play for 10 years in the Show. I think Fischer is more likely to become an All-Star.

- If a healthy Skenes for Made were on the table, both teams should take the trade, and neither would.

The problem with trading players like Skenes with multiple years of control is that you won’t get back the value you really need.  While Made for Skenes is equal value wise it would take more than that for the Pirates to trade Skenes.  Including more than Made for Skenes doesn’t make sense for the Brewers and only getting one prospect back for Skenes regardless how good the prospect is, is just not enough for the Pirates and wouldn’t make sense for them.

Ah... that's right. I was thinking of Adams/Wilken.

Right. You are right in that you left out he bats left, ain’t that right?

Yup. That's... pretty much exactly what the last post says. Do you need that spelled out MORE clearly?

I think most of us see the glut of 40-man options in the next 18 months, making it more likely to trade from the upper levels (or at least provide a motivation to trade from those levels). We also acknowledge that owners are wanting minor league contraction.

So. Does that make it more likely the Brewers trade their DSL/AZL players?

And thinking about that more broadly, does this mean they need to extract value from these players now, rather than wait and have to release them in some kind of minor league draft following the new CBA?

I haven't seen anything about a minor league draft and, really, that would be pretty outrageous. I wouldn't operate assuming anything like that coming down the pike.

But I think if anything they'll look to move on from guys at the highest levels. Jett and Adams are pretty obvious choices. No reason to move anyone with four or five years left in the system.

Minor league contraction won’t happen until MLB adds two new teams.  Low A is the one that will be removed.  The Brewers will also likely lose Nashville as a minor league affiliate and possibly Biloxi depending on which cities MLB chooses for expansion.  My bet is on Nashville and Austin as the new MLB cities.  I think Portland is out of the running with them not willing to negotiate with the Trailblazers in the NBA for a new arena or an update to the current one.

Once the Rays have their stadium situation sorted out expect MLB to go full blast on adding the two new teams.  MiLB contraction will occur then along with some realignment.

It seems at least one of Wilken/Adams might have to be somewhere else soon unless the Brewers move either of Burke/Fischer at the deadline. Both Burke and Fischer are probably ready to bump to Nashville whenever they are asked to. Frankly I would love to see Boeve go up with them.

So between Adams, Wilken, Burke, Fischer, Williams*, Boeve* ... that's a lot of corner infield types that are qualified to be in Nashville and only so many corner infield positions are available.

Any prospect is tradeable depending on the return. Including Made. Sometimes it pushes the boundaries of what would be realistic to deal a guy. Are you not dealing Made if the Royals offered Bobby Witt straight up?

I love Made. I’d be the first celebrating if we signed him to a 10 year deal tomorrow. He, like any other prospect, isn’t bust proof. His performance in Biloxi, while impressive, isn’t so eye poppingly good that you want to rush him up tomorrow (nor should that be expected at this age and level).

There have been many top prospects like Made that have come and gone in MLB. Some turned into superstars. Some became busts. Most, which is a category Made is probably the most likely to eventual fall into, have good careers as good players.

Jackson Holliday is probably the perfect recent cautionary tale.

And I’m not saying Holliday still can’t have a very nice career.

Just saying, I think too many people see a number 1 prospect in all of baseball and think “future superstar”. That can happen, but more often than not, it isn’t the outcome.

Let's look back at the top 5 prospects in baseball in the year 2020. Obviously it’s been a hodgepodge of different career arcs.

Prospects are just that. You trade a prospect for a been there done that every time unless it's a rental situation. I am thinking a Grienke type situation where you had a couple years at least. This is the year to go for it. Ohtani doesn't seem like same guy. Smith has been out. Mookie not great. No Blake. Dodgers are good but this could be done.

I will prelude this post with saying I believe anybody could be traded for the right piece. That being said, who is most likely to be traded based on lack of major league needs or oversupply in the minors?

With Bauers contract being up and Andrew Vaughn also getting pricey and with only 1 year left before becoming a free agent. The Brewers will also still want a minor league backup, I think you can assume that the Brewers will aim at keeping at least 1 Lefty bat for 1B and 1 Righty in the high minors. (especially if some are ready to take a 40 man spot). The rest might be higher up on trade availability.

Lefty 1B bats- my guess as to their trade value and how Brewers view them.
(1) Burke (probably best defensive 1B) (Bats and throws Left)
(2) Fischer (also 3B but preference could be given to Made or Ortiz)
(3) Boeve (Rule 5 Eligible)
(4) Bitonti
(5) Tayden Hall (Rule 5 Eligible)
(6) Tyler Black

Righty 1B Bats -
(1) Andrew Vaughn who will be more expensive then any past Brewers 1B in a long time (estimated 10 Mil for 2027)
(2) Adams
(3) Wilken (Rule 5 Eligible)

Most likely one of the Lefty 1B bats gets traded if not 2. I also would not be surprised if 1 righty bat gets traded, but it would have to be a package for a high value piece if it is Adams. I also think there is a chance they try to extend Bauers making more of these Lefty bats likely to be traded.

In an effort to not make the last post too long, this next post will look at OF.  Let's look at our current OF.

Yelich - FA 29
Mitchell - FA 29
Frelick - FA 30
Chourio - FA 32
Lara - FA 33
Lockridge - FA 32
Perkins - FA 30

The Brewers do have some high rising OF's in the upper minors. If there is no trade from the major league roster, they likely will not keep them all stashed on the 40-man. This makes it likely that the Brewers will look at trading some of their arb eligible OFs.

Jett Williams (Rule 5 Eligible) (also SS/2B/3B) (ETA 2027)
Adamzcewski (ETA Late 2027)
Ragsdale (ETA 2028)
Payne (ETA 2028-29)
O'Rae (Rule 5 Eligible) (also 2B) (ETA 2028)
Adams (Rule 5 Eligible) (also 1B/3B) (ETA 2027)
Black (Rule 5 Eligible) (also 1B/DH)

While there are not enough spots for 2028 for sure, the Brewers could decide to hold a little longer to increase trade value on these guys. That being said, barring major injuries, it is likely someone from their Major League Roster or several from their minors get traded. Most likely you are looking at a core of Mitchell, Chourio, Lara, Frelick, Yelich until minimum of 2028. I would guess Lockridge might have some trade value, and I would also put Frelick high up with his lack of power for a corner OF.  The one I'm circling here is Ragsdale as primary trade candidate even though I think his value will be a lot higher if he continues at this pace until the end of the year. Black, there might be some trade value towards a relief pitcher rental. As will be covered in a future middle IF post, Williams and O'Rae though loved by the organization are also high up as trade candidates that would be easy to let go especially with likely taking up 40 man space. Williams probably still has the highest trade value and though having a down season, underlying stats still show valuable skills. He is probably most likely to get traded.

Really like these last 2 posts of yours.

With Williams wrist injury and subsequent IL placement I’m guessing it hurts his trade prospects at this year’s trade-deadline.

From your list — Ragsdale & Adams are my picks to move at the deadline.

Posted

Adamczewski has been in the spotlight and exceeding expectations but I wonder how the org views him vs Ragsdale. Similar numbers this year. Ragsdale is 1.5 older, less service time used. A little less plate discipline but maybe more speed. Both bat lefty.

Dinges has been dealing with a shoulder impingement. He still has a ton of potential and we dont have any real good catching talent coming up the pipe outside of Quero. I don't see the brewers trading him.

Top ten... Pena, Williams, Fischer

All of them have value and are somewhat redundant.  I really would have a hard time pulling the trigger with Fischer.

11-20... Ragsdale, Dinges, Adams, Burke

21-30...Wilken

Note-I would not trade pitching, never ever.

Posted

FWIW Keith Law published his Top 70 prospects following the draft. He is bearish on the Brewers youngsters only including 3 in his Top 70: Made (2), Pena (23), Alexander Frias (69).
