Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread! (2024 edition)

When I was in college, there was a thought problem on one of the math professors' door that was like that using the parable of the tortoise and the hare.  I don't remember many of the details, but it was basically like if the hare cuts the lead in half over a time frame how could he ever pass him?  The premise being if the distance is only ever cut in half it can be cut in half into infinity without being surpassed.  I think the answer had something to do with time, but that was a long time ago.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Former student today, said to me, 'We have infinite numbers, right?' 'Yep.' 'So, if we have an infinite amount of numbers, how do we go from 0 to 1?' Me - puzzled look.

I always wondered how to account for odd and even numbers being infinite yet odd and even numbers together should be double what each are alone.

Funny, because that is what I ended up telling him.  I told him the parts would be so miniscule that it would have to round to 1.  I did also tell him it was a pretty deep thought for a 4th grader. Ha.

Maybe they would be interested in Quantum mechanics but that is an extremely advanced topic even for someone in high school or even an undergrad in college.

No kidding.  He's a bright kid, so hopefully he does something like that.  That'd be pretty awesome.

After watching a Dave Plummer YouTube video (former Microsoft employee and the creator of the task manager) where he talks about his recent diagnosis with autism in his early 50's, I wondered if I also have autism as I strongly related to his story. I took the same test as he did (LINK).

I scored 40 out of 50...the exact same score as him. Then I took the test with my wife checking over to make sure I was being truthful and my score went up...41. In pure twilight zone fashion, he did the exact same thing and his score also went up...42. From what I found online "A total score of 29 or more is indicative of clinically significant autism traits (Broadbent, et al., 2013). Using the cut-off score of 29 has a false positive rate of 1%."

I'm 37 and have never even thought it to be possible. I'm nothing like Sheldon Cooper. It anecdotally explains so much about me if I do indeed have it. Professionally speaking, it hasn't held me back one bit. In fact, it may be why I'm good at my what I do and why I'm the leader of our team of 6. It's so much for me to process at this time. Thanks for reading if you made it this far.

I have a friend of mine that thinks I have some traits of autism (I think we probably all do.). Thanks for posting this.  I scored a 31, which indicates some autistic traits.  Go figure.

Some of the questions could have been any of the four choices, depending on the situation or any given day.  So, I’m not sure how accurate my score really is.  There were some that were definitely agree/disagree answers, but a lot had me pondering which to choose because some circumstances would change my thought on the answer.

Yea...when I was tinkering with the test, it seems the score doesn't differentiate between strongly and slightly and only looked at the agree/disagree part. It seems it would have been better to have a neutral category that counted as a half point. Still, for me, it wasn't every question that was borderline. So the odds of it changing the result by 10 isn't that likely.

Regardless, having traits doesn't really necessarily mean you are necessarily autistic. The severity also needs to be looked at (which seems a lot more intense to get an actual diagnosis).

My wife also took the test and she scored 23. I was hoping she scored the same as me (or higher) just for the irony. It will be interesting though as we are going to just accept the results and we are going to modify how we communicate with each other.

My wife and I just took the test, and we both scored 8.

Not that I was worried, but just found it interesting that we got the exact same score.

I scored a 16, but I guess some of my answers may have gone either way such as my hobby is genealogy. I organize names, date, etc. I don't do that in anything else in my life. I'm not anti-social or have an anxiety of being social. I just don't care what others have to think many times. I can meet someone and forget their name in 3 seconds, because I just don't care. My kids find it funny to ask me people's names after I talk to them to see if I was engaged in the conversation. My wife on the other hand can tell you the name of waiter or waitress every time we go to a restaurant while I never even processed the name given.

High School is over... I don't care what most people think, I don't buy things to be "cool" or because it has a certain name brand on it. Successful people don't have time to judge me, and only "poor" people care what kind of car I drive.

Anyone know of a good xylem scraper used to expose the plumbum inside? My old one no longer works and don't want to buy another cheap one that breaks after a few uses.

Just heard about this one and am anxious to test it out: The Saltine Cracker Test

We all produce amylase enzyme in our saliva (brewers and distillers will know about amylase) to break down carbohydrates into simple sugars. But of course everyone's genetic makeup is a little different. This test apparently determines our body's tolerance to carbohydrates, how well we break it down, and can factor in how many carbs our bodies should really be eating in a day.

Put a saltine in your mouth and see how long it takes to go from salty to sweet:

1-14 seconds--you've got a high tolerance and 250g of carbs in your diet should be fine without the resulting weight gain

15-30 seconds--moderate tolerance. Aim for 100-250g of carbs per day

31+--low carb tolerance. Aim for <100g

Whenever someone is late responding to an email and comes back with "Sorry, I didn't see this in my inbox!" they can immediately be branded as a liar.

But I didn’t see it or I saw it but didn’t read it.  That is usually what happens.

Don't really think that is true, I use a Yahoo e-mail for more promotional/sales/coupon type e-mails but still get a valid e-mail now and then but can go days or even a week before logging into that e-mail account.

I get frustrated when an email is sent to a group of people asking if they will attend a function... then somebody responds to "ALL".  Then I get 30 email messages saying somebody will attend.  I really don't care.

Fan: "Are you keeping track of pitches or just the outs?"

Jimbo: "Just outs."

Fan: "You know it really offends me that they put the scoring decisions on the scoreboard.  It's like they're forcing us what to think.  You know what I mean?"

Jimbo: "Um...no."

I just got a group text that was supposedly from the post office saying I had an undeliverable package and to click on the link to resolve it. If you're going to try a scam, it's probably best not to do a group text.

Kwik Trip's marketing seems like it's being done by middle schoolers. I am expecting skibidi in their next campaign.

Coincidentally, I met most of their team and they were a bunch of hipster just out of college grads.

I really thought Griffey was going to break the HR record that year.  But then the strike happened.  He was on pace for 57 and could have gotten to 62 or 63 that year.  He was just an absolute monster in 94.

Oh yeah... the strike.

Mrs. Samurai and I (relatively newly married) had scheduled a week-long trip to Colorado.  We had tickets to the front row down the line in Mile High to see a Rockies game.  The week before we left, they went on strike.  Sigh...
