To put Hiura's K numbers in perspective he has a worse K% than Russel Branyan, Jose Hernandez and Chris Carter.  There is a reason why Hiura has been bad and it is because of his K%.  Also he has hole in his swing that covers the whole top third of the strike zone that pitchers can take advantage of and it is not just fastballs that he misses up there it is everything in the upper third of the strike zone.  His swing just doesn't allow him to get on top of or on balls placed in the upper third of the strike zone.  If a pitcher just throws pitches in the upper third of the strike zone they can get Hiura out and they can easily K him there.  Nearly all of his strike outs have come at the upper third of the strike zone and a vast majority of his whiffs come from there also.

Hiura is just not a good hitter.  He may have hot streaks from time to time but his cold streaks are far more common.

Cannot say the Brewers have missed Houser and Tyrone Taylor. Frankly it’s kind of amazing they got the Mets to take on all their salary in the trade.

I guess every team go's threw it.  Phillies, 'a really good team,' unable to prove it against Yankees.

NL East leaders lose their 11th in 15 games but remain confident they'll find a way out.

With that skid no team is currently on 100-win pace. The last year no team won 100 games was 2014.

Please don't bring up 2014. Now I need a paper bag to breathe into.

That's the crazy thing about baseball. Even the best teams, the World Series champs every year go through tough losing stretches. It just happens.

Wow is that our old Brett Phillips? What a story that would be if he came back to the MLB to pitch. He always did have a cannon. Great laugh too wishing the best for him! That World Series hit was epic on the Rays.

Joey Wiemer is watching with interest.

League average wOBA is .311 so far this year.

When position players are pitching, that jumps up to a .403 wOBA.

Aaron Judge has a .470 wOBA against actual pitchers.

I have nothing against Fedde as a person, but I'm pretty damn happy his debut as a Cardinal went to hell...

Dodgers went 11 W - 13 L in July, their first losing month since April 2018.

Not having a losing month in over 6 years is actually insane.

How many innings are the Pirates going to let Skenes throw this year?  He is currently at 108 innings pitched and only pitched about 135 innings last year between college and the minors.  He is only 27 innings or about 4-5 starts away from reaching the number of innings he pitched last year which should be about his last start in August or his first start in September.  If it takes him 5 starts that should put his innings match in September start 1.  He would then have about 3 more starts left in September and if he averages 6 innings pitched that puts him at about 150 innings pitched on the season.  Do the Pirates shut him down if they make the playoffs or stick him in the bullpen?

White Sox are going to put up one of the worst seasons of all time, but won’t draft higher than 10th next year with the new MLB Draft Lottery set up.

OK, I won't speak of 2014 but Corey Knebel was released today with a 3.26 ERA

Not to bad for a pitcher but bad for a closer. We could probably get him dirt cheap if no one else signs him.

Especially since it was back when Jesus Agular played 1st base and Lorenzo Cain center field.  Seems like the olden days.

I'd guess inning limit about 30 more to 165.  Only 15 to 150 seems too cautious and low.  Getting a Start in Playoffs adding 6 more considering all it'd mean for not only Pittsburgh but Skenes as an all time rookie has to be wanted by both sides.

Cinci not wasting any time to try out their new toy...

Reds recalled OF Joey Wiemer from Triple-A Louisville.
Wiemer was acquired by the Reds in the deal for Frankie Montas at the deadline. The outfielder is up while Will Benson is away on paternity leave.

Will be interesting to see how much run they give him, their OF has been pretty bad…

1.5 WAR (24th) | 88 wRC+ (22nd) | -12 DRS (25th)

Spencer Steer is their only OF that clears either of a 100 wRC+ or 0.5 WAR so far and he only spends about half his time on the grass.

I'm looking forward to watching Wiemer play for the Reds. I know it wasn't going to work out in Milwaukee barring some serious changes and progress but I liked the way he played and felt like he could be a Gorman Thomas type player for us at his peak.

A really good article on Trout over at Fangraphs.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/with-another-lost-season-for-mike-trout-a-sobering-parallel-emerges/

Trout was looking like a Bonds or Mays type of a player but now he is looking more like Griffey Jr.  Not the worst thing in the world but  he is no longer looking like one of the all time greats anymore due to the injuries.  Though being the next Griffey isn't a bad alternative to a career.

THRU 30

Trout (6159 PA)
176 OPS+ | 82.3 WAR

Mantle (7202 PA)
176 OPS+ | 90.7 WAR

Mays (5961 PA)
159 OPS+ | 76.9 WAR

Griffey (7319 PA)
148 OPS+ | 76.2 WAR

Aaron (7216 PA)
157 OPS+ | 80.7 WAR

AFTER 30

Mays (6536 PA)
153 OPS+ | 79.3 WAR

Aaron (6725 PA)
152 OPS+ | 62.4 WAR

Mantle (2708 PA)
159 OPS+ | 19.6 WAR

Griffey (3985 PA)
114 OPS+ | 7.6 WAR

Trout (488 PA)
132 OPS+ | 3.7 WAR
(6 years | $223M left)

Had to put Hank in there too even though he was a RF, pretty insane that he and Willie each had two separate HOF careers.

I’d already have Trout ahead of Griffey because his peak was higher, but hopefully he can find a few years of health over the next half decade to at least finish in the realm of Mantle’s regular season career totals.
