Its a good thing to keep the Cubs in it a bit longer.  Coasting for a month and a half can make it tough to handle the intensity of being thrown into a do or die 5 game series in October.

Its also good for it to happen while still playing well and really just getting unlucky.

If nothing else, yesterday's game proved a few things:

  1. The Miz has not yet arrived.
  2. The Crew can come back when the starting pitcher doesn't have a quality start
  3. The Crew still leaves a lot of people on base (LOB 9 in yesterday's game vs. 2 for the Cubs)

Turang has raised his wRC+ all the way up to 119.  He has a 229 wRC+ in the month of August and is only behind Shohei who is at 240.  Realistically I think his wRC+ will drop a bit once August finishes as this is just a crazy number for him to be putting up but since this is the optimism thread lets just say he will pass Ohtani!

We also have the Phillies and Padres in Sept, - rivals for the #1 and #2 seed. That ought to keep us sharp, too.

If anything says you're the best of the best it's the next best team in the division is celebrating beating you 3 games to 2 at home to "only" fall seven games back.

We have roughed up some pretty damn good pitchers during this run...Skenes, Keller, Strider, Senga, Boyd, etc.  Should bode well for us come playoff time when we'll see these same type of pitchers.

Kershaw, Fried.

We figured this stretch of 19 games in 18 days would be a tough stretch, especially against good teams. So far it's proving accurate, and the team is a little banged up as well. But if we survive this stretch and get healthy and hot for the playoffs it's ok. Should be a fun last month.

This is great, and would look even better if Vaughn qualified. His .601 first half vs .839 second half for an improvement of .238 would be good enough to place 4th on this list, right behind Turang.

That's a good perspective. If they can endure this unusual stretch with some of the tougher teams while missing key players, they should be able to compete with anything that comes their way in the playoffs. Hopefully they are being hardened and galvanized by a little adversity of schedule.

The Brewers went into a series with the team with the best record in baseball (other than them) at the same time the Cubs went into a series with the team with the worst record in baseball.  The Cubs gained zero ground and the magic number dropped by 3, successful weekend.

The Brewers are currently the #2 offense this season:

  1. NYY - 719 runs
  2. Brewers - 711 runs.

And of course, the first three games of the season gave NYY a 22-run advantage.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Kind of a bummer game so far for the Crew today, so I'm keeping the vibes going by replaying this a bunch of times. This is my leader in the clubhouse for coolest defensive play of the year. Maybe not the most thrilling, maybe not the most impactful, but coolest. The ability to go from zero to max sprint exactly where he needs to be then seamlessly into a pop-up slide right against the wall to casually end the inning against Taylor of all people (may his name live in Milwaukee infamy forever) is just insanely cool to me.

Go Crew.
