I'm not an expert, but if not aware the card collecting/trading etc market has had a massive rebirth in the last say 7ish years.   So my guess is if someone is willing to pay say 1 mil, they are expecting it to go up. They're doing it in a gambling mindset, not 'baseball keepsake' mindset.        Is the 1 mil number too high? IDK, I'm just saying how cards seemed to have disappeared as a 'thing' for like 20 years is over and its back.    I suppose its not unlike the daily gambling on crypto, or go back a few years to the NFT boom.

For example, I think Justin Herberts rookie 1/1 card sold for like 1.5 mil.

Not a chance.

Maybe if Skenes winds up being a legendary pitcher it would hold value to card collectors but even the  those typically are t the folks paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for cards.

One of a kind memorabilia sure I can see it, one of a kind baseball cards sure fire money losers at those amounts.

Believe me. I completely understand the ups and downs of sports cards and memorabilia. Lol they need to be either flipped right away, or saved for 30+years. There's equal risk no matter which way collectors decide to do.

The popularity of card collecting always goes up and down. I remember it being huge from around 1993-2000, then wasn't popular for quite a while, then like you said, it's made a resurgence the past several years.

If the kid gets it graded, and it comes back a gem-mint 10 or 9.5, it will almost certainly hold it's value, or even gain value. If Skenes ends up a HOF pitcher that is.

Does anyone think the fans really care about this stupid card?

The card collectors do, anyone not in that hobby would think this is just crazy talk...

Not a chance I'd take that offer.

Money talks, and the only thing I'd be looking for after pulling that card is cash, the most I could get.

Yep.  If it goes for $1M, he'll get ~$500K after taxes and auction house fees.

Stick half of that into a trust that he gets when he's 55 and he'll never have to save or invest another dollar for the rest of his life.

I think this kid should’ve taken the Pirates ticket offer. 2 tickets behind the plate even for the Pirates against bad teams would still get at least $100 for the pair or $8100 a year for 30 years. Obviously some games would sell for more.

An auction house might net more but they are going to take 40-50%

Christie's and Sotheby's charge 15%.

They also typically charge a buyer's premium of 10+%.

Most auction houses get around 20%. Give or take.

Yeah that’s my point…….fans going to go to more games to see the card? Of course not…….if people are walking by the exhibit they would look but this is a big nothing burger as far as being anything that anybody really cares about as a pirates fan.

Making a big deal about this like they are doing would just make me mad as a fan….lol…..

Nutting could pay for this from his huge profit he makes each year from the Pirates revenue sharing and not even notice it.  The whole ticket thing just shows how bad Pirates attendance is (you have available season tickets behind home plate? embarrassing).

Ok, and the seller will have to pay huge tax on the income.

For some uber rich card enthusiast I suppose it’s a cool buy, but the chances it’s worth anything significant in 20 years seems really remote. Lucky Kid to get the right card at the right time

If Brewers offered the same deal for a 1/1 Jackson Chourio card (pretend it's the same value as the Skenes card) I would definitely take the deal. The memories of 30 years of season tickets behind home plate would more than make up for losing money giving the card up.

Insert joke about an 11 year old not understanding the significance of Livvy Dunne's box...

As a 46 year old I had to google the significance of Livvy Dunne.

Then unless Skenes absolutely flops out of nowhere, or injuries shorten his career, that card will be worth big-time $$.

It will only mantain if he ends up being a HOF player which is still a longshot.

If this was a Brewers related deal I think I'd take it, or bargain for a little more. Food an beverage at each game, parking, maybe a car to drive me to the stadium. I think I'd get value out of that over a card.

Yes. I basically said the same thing in a previous comment.

There were bounty's by collector's for over a quarter mill. My guess is that it goes for over 1/2 million maybe a million at auction. There has been a ton of press around this card in the card collecting hobby so auction is the smart move, unless you live in Pittsburg and can actually go to the games.

I do not care about the team in the slightest bit in this case, DOUBLY SO if it's the ****** Pirates and Bob Nutting. I take the cash without hesitation.

Everyone involved with the team has piles and piles of cash. If they want the card, they have the funds to buy it instead of offering free tickets and jerseys.

I don't pay much attention to the world of card collecting but it is wild to me that things that have so little tangible value (e.g, a piece of cardboard, a digital "coin") are somehow worth so much money.  Also, without knowing the details, these 1/1 cards seem like they're pushing the boundary of sports cards basically being gambling.  I suppose you could make the case that they always kind of have been  to some extent, but still...
