Firstly, Civale demanding a trade is hilarious to me.

Allow me to nitpick, please. The tweet says “request” and “ask”. Changing it to “demand” can color the discussion.

A request is something you do directly to the person that can do something about it.

Tweeting it out to the general public before you've even thrown one pitch out of the BP doesn't feel like "asking nicely".

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

It's a bum move, he could have just collected his paycheck and requested it privately instead of knifing the team

Shouldn't be surprising that Civale would want a trade to continue being a starting pitcher somewhere; he's going into free agency after the season. I'm not sure what return trading him would even bring. Finding corner infield help for Civale would be optimal, but perhaps just clearing the 40-man roster spot and the salary, while picking up a couple lottery ticket minor leaguers should be the expectation.

GMs are smart enough to know the Brewers’ situation whether Civale (or agent) said anything or not. He isn’t likely to bring back much in a trade either way - maybe if there are multiple teams interested…

Doesn't help when he publicly requests a trade...

We weren't going to get much for him, true, but now we'll get even less since everyone knows he wants out.

Personally, I think it's a mistake removing him from the rotation.  No reason he can't continue to start, followed by a piggybacker.  Not like he is going to go 6 or 7 innings each start.

and you get a trade request which immediately lowers his return (teams won't overpay for a guy who wants out).

There is no evidence that a trade request lowers a players value absolutely no evidence it is just fan speculation.

If anything, it raises it.  If a team quietly starts proactively inquiring about trading a guy, I think it would raise more red flags as though the team might think something is wrong with him.

By him or his agent coming out and requesting it publicly, the story is just that he wants a better situation for him, and not that a team is looking to pawn off potentially damaged goods.

I can see it from both ways, and not being a GM myself, I guess we just have to trust the system in place.

They play for money. Moving him to the bullpen will potentially cost Civale millions of dollars. Putting a little pressure on Milwaukee to send him somewhere he can start is only looking out for his own financial interest.

Let’s not forget Yelich requested a trade in Miami for no other reason than he didn’t want to play there if they weren’t going to win.

Does it really matter who states a player is available?  Other GM’s probably have known for a while now that he is available in a trade.  Him claiming he wants to be traded doesn’t change the fact here.  This is more just fan speculation that a player saying they want to be traded somehow decreases the value of said player.  Teams don’t trade players unless they get the value they are looking for.

Generally dumb to have allowed this to leak.  I'm sure it was the agent.  But one would've thought the conversation could've been had that they're going to try and trade and that it would go well enough for the agent to keep quiet.   In the meantime, good chance you'll be needed again soon due to injury.  But only so much you can do

ETA: IKF in Pit is a close salary with him.  Pitt could hope for a good two months to re-trade at deadline or just take him for consistent mediocrity, maybe resign next year or if there's a way to get a pick back

I would bet it was leaked by Civale.  If you remember the Hader trade no one knew till it happened.

To have a piece of information leaked it has to be a piece of information that was intended to be kept a secret in the first place.

Every week that goes by with Civale pitching out of the pen potentially hurts his financial future, why would he ever keep his wish for a trade secret? Frankly he puts more pressure on himself to go out and perform when he is called upon now, which if he can follow through is only a good thing for both he and the Brewers.

An ERA of 4.91 is very average and seems he has had a pulled hamstring all season.

Sure number are numbers.   But that 4.91 is skewed by the one start at beginning of the year when he got hurt.    Since he's been back he's at:  4 starts, 19 innings, 17K, 3.32 ERA.

If it's a 2-party negotiation where the buyer has all the leverage, this may be true. For a scenario where multiple parties are competing for the same resource, it doesn't really matter whether the seller has to sell or not. The competition is among the buyers. I doubt the whole "organization has to trade X player" makes that much of a difference in most cases. Plenty of teams can use a solid pitcher.

It will cost a team about $4.5 million to have Civale through season’s end. That is ten times more than the prorated league minimum salary.

This could be a good opportunity for someone to get a somewhat reliable starter for little or no prospect cost. Or, someone pays ten times more than necessary for replacement level innings. 🤷‍♂️

Says that while he waits for a trade he's going to go and compete while he's in the bullpen. I think he's handled this as well as anyone could be expected to.
