well, to be fair San Diego is actually a somewhat comparable market size, they just finance the heck out of their organization to come up with cash they don't have to fund their team.  MLB has been sniffing around trying to make sure the Padres don't wake up one day with the realization that they're bankrupt.  They had to take out a loan just to make this year's payroll.

Preller probably should be canned this offseason for the mess he put the organization into.

Similar size, but I suspect they receive much more TV-radio money even with the proximity to LA, no? I also recall reading something about the area around the ballpark being largely team-owned and much of that development pouring cash into the ball club.

Taking out the loan to meet payroll is.........interesting.

If you're Preller, when this all catches up to you I think what you do is look at the other teams in MLB that aren't happy with their GM, then move to whichever one of those has the largest market.

I don't think that he has as good job prospects as you think, once he is done in SD.  Unless he can show he was forced to do some of the moves by the owner.

Trading for Kwan would be a very Brewers thing to do

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Fangraphs Ranks and FV

DeVries - SDP#2 - 50FV - High A SS

Nett - SDP#10 - 40+FV - AA MIRP

Baez - SDP#26 - 35+FV - AA SP

Nunez - SDP#35 - 35+FV - AAA SIRP

Just for fun, a Brewers comparable would be Made, Wichrowski, Birchard, and Childers

I don’t know how much is other people on that staff, but he is still I think generally regarded as a good talent evaluator. He might just have to suck it up and work as GM under a stronger POBO.

Yeah, but if they win the World Series all of the additional revenue from tickets/concessions/merchandise will pay off the loan!

(Straight from the Broke Gambler's playbook.)

San Diego is trying like hell to get more involved in the Tijuana/Mexico market in terms of TV revenue, which is about the only direction their market could grow locally.

On the US side of things, they are ranked 30th in terms of market size nationally, while Milwaukee is ranked #38.  Being as close to LA as they are actually limits their market size in terms of TV revenue, much like Milwaukee is limited by being close to Chicago.

The difference is that San Diego does indeed have a decent chunk of built-in revenue with properties they either own or have a stake in around Petco, while Milwaukee doesn't.  Plus having Seidler throw money at the team for years once he realized he wasn't long for this world.  But, that extra billionaire cash has dried up and the extra property revenue isn't nearly enough cover what they currently have on their payroll books longterm.

It really isn't.  The value for higher prospects is not linear. Made is a FV 60 prospect worth about $55 million which is about twice what what a FV 50 prospect is worth at about $28 million. Now some people have DeVries higher but I tend to trust fangraphs more conservative estimates on prospects than some of places that seems to be more into hyping players than evaluation.

Yup. But only if no one around the league knew it was going to happen. Once the rumors started circulating about our interest was when I became sure it wouldn’t happen. That’s just not how we roll.

This is where I have been. Stick with the "bite of the apple" approach. Stand pat. Let the next five years be a lot of fun with the young players coming up.

I mean, the "bite of the apple" approach has gotten us exactly 0 playoff series victories since 2018.  Are we good with that?  I have higher expectations than that at this point.  We are way past the point of just being happy making the playoffs.

A lot of that is bad luck. You're talking a sample size of three or four games across 6 seasons (with a few weird Covid years in there)

I am happy with the “bites of the apple” approach, but you can still take that approach while trading away some prospects

Very true and this is probably how Arnold and company views it as well.  Just seems like the right time to be a little more aggressive than usual.  Still 4 hours to go...

If Kwan is the biggest bat out there, I don't know if there is a real “go for it” opportunity even if the Brewers were inclined to do it. I like Kwan a lot, but how much does he really raise the ceiling? Is it more than Made would in two years? I kinda doubt it.

Neto would help this team a lot, but the Angels are the Angels and it seems that no one can get him without blowing way past “go for it” territory into “nuke your farm system from orbit” territory. I just don’t see the path. It takes two to tango.

I know there are 4 hours to go and the brewers are the only NL playoff contender that hasn't done anything in the last 24 hours. I don't want Arnold to go all AJ Preller and act wreckless. Also I understand relief pitching is crazy expensive. A move like Finnegan  or some power off of the bench would help though.

I don't get this idea of trying to get bullpen help. The Brewers have plenty of good relievers, plus some starters who are almost back from injury.
