From a baseball standpoint Joey has 'earned' the demotion to a platoon guy this year and to a question mark for his future.

From a human standpoint he has watched the Brewers give away his job in the future to a kid who hadn't even debuted yet, paid that kid a lot more money than he has ever been offered, then had them call up the kid later/now to take his job permanently. That's a lot for any player to process mentally over the course of a few months.

From both a baseball and human standpoint that was an awesome moment for him. That was a primal roar he let out around the bases.

Joey telling the ball to get out was one of my favorite moments of the year. This team never gives up and I love watching the Crew every game. Baseball is a long grind.

I have coached kids who have gone through the same type of emotions when their hard work has paid off.

i actually teared up a little.

Today was Blake Perkins 23rd start of the season.

The Brewers have gone 13 W - 10 L (.565 W%) in those 23 games.

The Rays are currently 5th in MLB with a .571 W%.

Facing the righty tomorrow, what are the odds that Vaughn is on the bench?

99.99999%?

If I counted right the Brewers have faced 32 RHP since Vaughn came back from injury.

He has started 15 of those 32 games, or 46.9%.

The Brewers have gone 8 W - 7 L in those 15 games, and 13 W - 4 L in the 17 games Vaughn didn't start against RHP since his return.

Vaughn as PH this year
11 PA of 333/455/556 (183 wRC+)

Frelick as PH this year
8 PA of 429/500/429 (172 wRC+)

Vaughn vs RHP 2026
82 PA of 260/329/356 (94 wRC+)

Frelick vs RHP 2026
203 PA of 264/337/356 (96 wRC+)

Vaughn vs RHP 2025-26
250 PA of 261/320/423 (106 wRC+)

Frelick vs RHP 2025-26
623 PA of 277/345/408 (112 wRC+)

Old man rant - I hate Gatorade showers …

Hate might be too strong for me, but they are tiresome and cliche. Spontaneous moments like whenever the first dumping occurred are cool. Just like Leroy Butler's first, in the moment, Lambeau Leap. After that first time, it gets hokey. But whatever, most fans dig that kind of thing.

Can I say something about the whole Vaughn/Frelick debate just as an observation without restarting the fire? Just observing, no sides taken.

If Frelick is going to perform as good as Vaughn against RHP... being able to have Vaughn available to deploy in a game altering moment is an insane luxury, particularly when we can get him in against a LHP.

(I'm on my phone and will be on the road the majority of this morning so I don't really have the capability to look this up myself..) But just in the last few weeks I can think of the game against the Reds when Vaughn pinch hit against the lefty with the bases loaded, cleared the bases, and I think we won that game by one run? I also remember a game in Colorado when Vaughn had an RBI pinch hit in the 9th, maybe even to tie the game, and we won in extras if I'm not mistaken?

If anyone has a second to look this up (otherwise I will try to later tonight when I'm home) ... How many game altering moments has Vaughn been a part of when he has been put into the game that he hasn't started?

Part of the stat above with the Brewers winning a high % of Sal's starts might directly be correlated with having an Ace ready to deploy when the game hangs on the balance late.

Just a thought.

And Levering would go and on about it, ad nauseam.

I've only been listening to him the past couple years. Just lately now I'm starting to notice all the silly drivel he yammers on about for far too long. It's OK to have dead spots on air when the game is going on, let the game call itself sometimes. Don't need to fill every moment with talk just to talk.

With how Frelick is doing this month, it's pretty straightforward to start him against RHP.

Man of the Match: Joey Ortiz (WPA = +0.20).

Match?

I keep seeing you post this, is it a soccer related thing due to the big soccer stuff going on?

I've never heard baseball games referred to as matches before...

Surprising win, as for this time yesterday I was under the impression we might not win another game this year and might be one of the worst teams in the league

Indeed. Same thing happens in music, have to let it breath, especially in blues. Young blues guitarists just want to rock and pound a million notes into space to show how fast they can play, when a "less is more" approach is what is more appropriate for the genre. That's what came to mind listening to Levering and Vinny prattle on about some silly, peripheral thing for too long. It's a skill calling a game, and they do better than I could though.

Great point. They do it better than I could ever do it. Still pretty irritating though.

Exactly. this a great example of the "lies" of statistics being able to push people to a particular conclusion instead of just letting the results speak for itself.

If you tell a casual observer that the Brewers have the 5th best record baseball when Perkins starts, they might think "Amazing! They should start him every day!"

However, when you invert that statistic you realize that the Brewers were 38-21 (.644) with him not starting, which puts them in a nearly a tie with the Dodgers (.647) for best record in baseball.

This is where the eye test of "man, Perkins has really struggled and its hurting the team" prevails. Sometimes its just what everyone obviously sees.
