That's a lot to give up but I dont think its an overpay, it depends on how you value those to OFs. I dont rate either of them as highly as others do on this site. They have plenty of depth.  Too bad it did not help the Rule 5 draft protection as neither had to be protected,

We'll see how you feel in a couple of years when these guys rip our hearts out several times per season...

Ragsdale sooner obviously, but 3 years from now, they could be 2/3 of their starting outfield, and we will look back on this trade and cry.

Frias has cooled off quite a bit since the promotion.  He's got a ways to go and a couple of levels to prove before he truly is a "prospect".  Him being "ranked" so high is a function of the "shiny new toy" that prospect evaluators get enamored about - they want to be the first to say that they were in a on a guy.

As for Ragsdale, the Brewers must feel like there's a juiced ball in AA.  There's a reason he was a 7th round pick.

A few things:

1) The way we value prospects or how a guy behind a screen at Baseball America values a prospect doesn’t equate to reality in a trade always.

2) We have two OF spots taken up by long term contracts. The uphill battle to even get a roster spot and full playing time is pretty steep.

3) There were, at minimum, two other players higher rated than them in the minor league system. And arguably those 2+ players are all closer to the MLB roster.

I see clamoring to sell high on players around here, but usually only players anyone with a baseball IQ over 40 would know is at their peak value. Possible we just sold high on some prospects that had little chance to ever crack our MLB roster anyway.

Clearly, the Brewers do not think that highly of Frias. I think I will just give them the benefit of the doubt even though it doesn’t thrill me at face value.

Also should be noted that Sawyer Strosnider and Kyle Jones are both high pick college OFs who will likely be in full-season ball next year. There are only so many innings available.

But you are giving them to a division rival.   Jesus *****.   That cannot be the return.    This reliever will probably suck too

Plus he's on the IL for at least 2 more weeks.

UGH!

I choose to take this as them being very confident in our ability to find Latin talent.

Maybe Frias starting in Arizona rather than Wilson is probably the clearest sign on how they view him?

This is an overpay. But looking at what the return has been for others, it seems about par for the course for this year’s trade deadline.
it’s either overpay or get left behind.

Yeah, this is really false.  Every other trade before this one was pretty underwhelming returns for the big name guys.

We got fleeced...

I'm fine with the cost.  We have a lot of outfield talent both on the big club and in the minors.  Frias hurts, but nothing is certain with him.  Ragsdale was going to have a tough time making it to Milwaukee.  Two guys like this were not going to come cheap.  Even as rentals.

Ragsdale turns 23 in December and has Chourio and Lara on big deals with two years remaining for Mitchell and Yelich.

Brewers will flip Megill for prospects in the offseason, Contreras in 1.5 years and we will have replenished anything traded and not a soul will care about them unless they are MVPS.

There was division tax on this for sure though.

Yah, at some point OFers were getting traded. That’s what happens when you develop well. I suppose being upset over some non-Top 10 organizational prospects is a good problem to have.

And I’m sure we will trade away a few future starters in the OF. But I suppose that means we have some great ones patrolling our OF.

Just because they are blocked in our system doesn’t mean you sell low on them.

Also conspiracy theory: seems like they need to overpay to get what they want. Rumors of Pena being offered for Skubal as well.

The league doesn’t want the brewers to beat the dodgers. They want a cap and the brewers could be a major factor if they get it or not.

Ya that last point is the real kicker. It’s pretty clear the Brewers internal evaluation of Frias isn’t as high as say the me just put out there by Fangraphs last week.

that’s what I need to remind myself of. The brewers are good at this and they know more than I do or anyone who is putting out publicly available prospect evaluations.

Agreed Ragsdale is fine but both him and Frias is tough.

Rags, Adamczewski & Payne are all on sort of the same track AFA readiness (Payne maybe a bit behind) & I thought one of those three would go, sooner or later. Ragsdale really took quite a step forward this year, sorry to see him go but Adamczewski's ahead of him. Payne, we'll see.

I was good with one of the three OFs (Anderson, Encarnacion & Frias) in Wilson going & predicted as much. Frias is the one I'd like to have kept though.

This obviously helps the team in 2026, but it smells like they were beaten out of a few other things & felt the need to pull it. Getting both done in one deal helped it along I suppose, but It's a rough price for two rentals.

This might be my least favorite Arnold trade yet. Frias AND Ragsdale is a massive overpay.

This is the worst trade I've seen the Brewers make since... I mean, I HONESTLY cannot remember. I hated Mitch Hanniger for Parra, but my GOD does that look pale in comparison(I also like Logan Schafer more, but nothing like this).

After getting over the initial shock, my thoughts are mostly that I'm OK with including Ragsdale. I'm not buying that he's suddenly a power hitter, and I think the accompanying strikeout rate is more likely to stick than the power is. Still, he's a good prospect, but with Lara, Chourio and Mitchell already here, and Payne/Adamczewski in the system, it's the kind of good prospect that I get you have to include in trades.

Not a fan of including Frias at all though. He is so far away from the majors that there is a lot of risk with him, but my philosophy is generally that the players with the big-time tools, you keep. It's the only way you can get your homegrown superstars. So I'd have prefered someone else in there, this feels like an overpay.

At the same time though I can see the logic. We have other outfielders, and including Frias won't hurt us for several more years even if he does make it big (and he might never). Im glad it wasn't Josh Knoth; I feel it's vital that we keep our best pitching prospects around.

So I'm in the camp of "I don't like it, but it's not the disaster I initially thought it was".

Surprised by the process here. I generally take the approach of “Arnold knows best” and maybe that holds true here but the risk vs. reward balance just feels off. Frias and Ragsdale may turn out to busts/non difference makers, but the “reward” for letting the Cardinals find out if 117 mph exit velocity is a harbinger of future stardom feels like it should be more than a mid rotation rental and a bullpen arm.

Nice positive spin, but this trade is bad.

It's ok to criticize the Brewer's front office, it really is.

Relax.

I think the Brewera internal evaluation means less than whatever the other 29 clubs evaluation is. Because if they value him anywhere near the ranking publications, this is still an overpay even if the Crew thinks less of him. You don’t have to give up a red hot AA OF and a top 50 prospect for May and an injured relied pitcher. Only this makes sense is if the entire league believes Frias is nowhere near a top 50 prospect.

There is always a choice, and this time, his choice was to be fleeced by a team in our own division.

This is gross, REALLY GROSS!

Screw Arnold.

I'd have thought those two players could have headlined a Skubal trade.

If this is the price we paid, I'd have been happy to stand pat and do nothing, nothing at all.

GROSS.

I do think this is an overpay, however, do you really think these two are comparable to the headliner prospects the Dodgers gave up for Skubal?
