As for Ragsdale, the Brewers must feel like there's a juiced ball in AA.  There's a reason he was a 7th round pick.

Are we going to discount Jesus Made, then?

I'm fine with the cost.  We have a lot of outfield talent both on the big club and in the minors.  Frias hurts, but nothing is certain with him.  Ragsdale was going to have a tough time making it to Milwaukee.  Two guys like this were not going to come cheap.  Even as rentals.

I got to see Ragsdale play in Appleton for a few months, he's legit.

He's got star written all over him, and was climbing fast.

It's a loss.

Like most of you, this makes me uncomfortable. But the more I think about it, the more I realize it is because this is the Cardinals.

I guess my hope would be that as longball mentioned above, these were two prospects the Brewers were comfortable with parting with, and the Cardinals were the best return available. If that were how a front office operated, that would be logical to me.

that’s what I need to remind myself of. The brewers are good at this and they know more than I do or anyone who is putting out publicly available prospect evaluations.

I dunno. I'm going to wait until I hear from a more level-headed, experienced voice. When does Greg Amsinger come on the air?

Ragsdale is Tristan Peters on steroids. It is definitely a loss. Frias is more than a shiny new prospect toy. He has an elite 5-Tool development package. Scouts have raved about him since his first innings in the DSL pre-injury. It's fine to downplay things but sometimes words are just words. AND, Ragsdale's power surge has happened all season. Yes, the Minor League balls appear juiced BUT Ragsdale is about as plug and play MLB ready player as it gets - today. Everything about him is just consistent, contact, good decisions and a good athlete. This is simply put: an Overpay.

Or conversely, they really wanted May and Romero.

Im totally fine including Ragsdale. Hes overperforming hard right now. Frias is the one that hurts, his potential is sky high, 115 MPH exit velos and a rocket launcher of an arm, plus good speed. Already showing good power albeit it was mostly in the DSL and he’s cooled off at the A level.

This feel like a Monkey’s Paw trade. People were banging the table for a trade. Any trade. They were bored and wanted some action just because they were bored and wanted their shiny new toys.

Now we overpaid for rentals. How’s that for action?

Yeah. That's sounds exactly how the Brewers FO works. They log into Reddit and see that the fans want a trade and then just say, "Let's just get someone because brewboy_85 wants us to do a trade."

On MLB.com it says Alexander Frias and Carson Ragsdale.

Brewers are so good they traded a player not even in the organization!

Not gonna lie, it stings a little extra seeing some of most vocal complainers who were lamenting the Brewers inactivity now turning around and being the most vocal against what it cost to get May and Romero. Even worse is how dirty it feels to have had the same initial reaction to the deal. Cubs fans don't like giving up Moises Ballesteros for Zeferjahn either. Standing pat was not the move here though. I just have to trust the Brewers aren't under-calculating what they gave up.

Frias has cooled off quite a bit since the promotion.  He's got a ways to go and a couple of levels to prove before he truly is a "prospect".  Him being "ranked" so high is a function of the "shiny new toy" that prospect evaluators get enamored about - they want to be the first to say that they were in a on a guy.

As for Ragsdale, the Brewers must feel like there's a juiced ball in AA.  There's a reason he was a 7th round pick.

No, Baseball America is not in the habit of ranking an 18-year-old in the top 100 because he's the "shiny new toy."

Braylon Payne would have been a top 100 prospect if they were looking for the "shiny new toy."

They ranked him in the top 100, which is pretty rare for them for an 18-year-old kid... because he's huge tools. And if he has a ways to go to be considered a prospect, why'd the Cards even want him? Why trade for a couple of non-prospects?

Also, Frias is hitting .367/.438/.582 in his last 10 games, so... he seems just fine to me. Of course, just keeping your head about water at his age is pretty impressive, but he's done more than that.

This is antithetical to what the Brewers do... and I REALLY hope this doesn't come back to bite them in the ass the way the James Shield trade bit the White Sox....

I do think this is an overpay, however, do you really think these two are comparable to the headliner prospects the Dodgers gave up for Skubal?

This price is certainly closer to what the Dodgers paid than the Brewers return is to what the Dodgers gained.

Yeah, there's a glut regarding these two. But I'd have been much happier if they were able to deal from the 1B-3B glut (Adams, Boeve, Wilkin, Burke, Fischer, Bitonti). It takes two though.

Boy, Ragsdales' stock has shot up quickly.

I’m not saying that’s how the FO actually operated, but a lot of people have been clamoring for a trade. We get a trade, but it’s one that’s hard to stomach since we overpaid for guys we likely aren’t going to keep long term, and we sent talent to a division rival.

This trade seems like something the Padres would do. It just doesn’t fit our M.O. at all.

The only way this turns out to be a “good” trade is if May and JoJo help get us to a World Series. I just don’t see them being that big of needle movers.

To everyone saying Ragsdale is overperforming: this is only his first full season of pro ball and he's done nothing but perform exceptionally well. This could be him just scratching the surface of what he's capable of. The Brewers shouldn't be in the business of trading guys like him years before they need to.

Listening to Cardinals radio talk - obviously they are happy with return.

Bernie Miklasz (writer for Cardinals) just said May has the No 7 FIP among all MLB starters since April 10th.

Oof. Two potential major league outfielders to rent a starter who does not miss bats and a lefty reliever with an inflated WHIP and who isn't even available for a couple more weeks?

This tells me the Brewers lost on every other potential pitcher out there.  Or maybe something else is still coming.

Even if these two guys help us, this is not a World Series move, so let's hope this is not all we have to talk about after the trade deadline.

Give me a break. “Plug and play MLB ready”?? He’s got 26 games above A-Ball.

Let me know if you want to lay some action on him seeing the majors this year. Plug and Play?! Hahahaha

It’s a sellers market, they’ve now acquired four players and given up one prospect who was on a Top 100 list and it’s all doom and gloom. Yet, the same folks would jump up and down if they stood pat and ran it back with who they had.

Plug and play mlb ready…. That was a good one 😆

I guess we should throw Adamczewski into some deal for some rental scrub since he was a 15th rounder and pencil in Brock Wilken as our starting third baseman.

I mean just a ridiculous statement about draft position.

As per usual, and no offense, but the truth hurts:

You are utterly clueless and zero informed when it comes to the Brewers system and their immense Pool of upper-tier talent. Zero.

I need someone to rationalize this return. If May had some control maybe I’d understand. Prospect niks are basically laughing at us and lauding the cardinals for the return. I think we could look very very stupid in a couple years.

Let’s hope the Brewer Fan reaction gauge is still working well.

The more  people hate a trade the better it usually works out…….

Time will tell.

In the same way that 20-30 percent of American holidays are meant to sell greeting cards, the trade deadline is meant to sell column inches.

The Brewers are always in damned either way position. Either they swing big and sell the prospects on a very uncertain bet, or they stand pat and get nationally (and locally) hammered for not doing something to get over the hump in October. It's a no-win situation.

As others have said, 2/3 of our current OF is locked up on long-term MLB deals. Those guys is gonna play. Then, you've got two prospects ahead of them already in the system. Then, you've got 2 top 100 draft picks (okay, Jones was #102), and I haven't even counted Felick or Lockridge, both of whom the org seems to like. Plus, I think OFers are the easiest position to find and develop.

Honestly, if May had one more year of control, I think people would be perfectly fine with this, which tells you how off-base the "worst trade ever" remarks are. It's probably a slight overpay. It stinks that it's to the Cardinals (though that org is a total and complete mess right now if you ask me). And yet, the Brewers got two needed arms and dealt of a position of great depth.

This feels like a typical deadline deal to me. There's not a lot of value to be had in a sellers market. There's probably a 10 percent chance we really regret this, a 30 percent chance neither Frias or Ragsdale do anything at all, and a 60 percent chance it works out within range of even, probably with a wider swath of that giving the Cardinals a couple wins worth of future value.

We overvalue our own prospects. You can look at it like we only got two rentals, or you can look at it like we got two MLB quality pitchers for two guys outside the organizational top 10.

This is perfectly reasonable, if you ask me.

Most trades have the chance to be Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell.

I remember the consternation over losing LaPorta, Brinson, Harrison, and Diaz. (I know different trades)

I remermber being excited about Jose Capellan and having a 100 mph fireballer. (That could have gone better)

If May and Romero contribute to a ring, I don't care what we gave up.

If they stink, it'll give us something to complain about for years.

The system is so good that giving up 11&13 is painful.  That's a positive.

Hope we still trade for a bat.
