It feels like those two could have been the backbone of a Skubel deal. Add two more pieces and make it happen. Nobody would be complaining if that was the get back.

Whatever any of us thinks about this trade, kudos to Brandon Sproat for making such a strong effort to justify it.

Actually no it couldn't. The Tigers were very clear in wanting some pitching in the return for Skubal

This trade has the long-term potential to hand the Devil Magic BACK to the Cardinals.

Ya know... it'll PROBABLY be nothing.

Just like John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander was PROBABLY going to be nothing.
Just like Fernando Tatis Jr for James Shields was PROBABLY going to be nothing.
Yordan Alvarez for JoshFields
Ryne Sandberg
Pete Crow-Armstrong

... this is the type of trade that'd transfer that "devil magic."

Ok, Logan Henderson and Coleman Crow. I'd take River Ryan over Henderson.

Has anyone ever picked up a hitter at the deadline whom you can reasonably argue made the difference in getting that team to the World Series?

I asked the hive mind last week about deadline trades that actually moved the needle as far as the 2026 Brewers need to move it — from losing the LCS to winning it. What people came up with were basically some starting pitchers: Cone, Verlander, Sutton IIRC.

We could all be forgetting someone, of course, and I certainly can’t sit here and say it’s impossible to pick up a hitter who could get a team over that line. But if a strategy has rarely if ever worked before, I have a hard time getting upset about not pursuing it.

I learned here today that C J Abrams and anybody else is available for the right price (Jesus Made plus)

Oooh, that's a good one. Well done.

Between Ragsdale and Frias, giving up Frias hurts me the most. It's not every day you see a prospect get that much hype and skyrocket as quickly as he did, and Fangraphs did hype him up quite a bit with talks of his "crazy" bat speed. That being said, whenever we trade away prospects/young players, more often than not we don't end up missing them in the long run. I just hope that our player evaluation is on point this time as well.

Well this has been an absolute joy. I said it before and I'll say it again, I love waking up to these types of posts.

Going into reading this thread I actually knew the trade details so the first four pages had me wincing a bit because I knew that the last 14 pages would be rough to read.

Yes, Ragsdale is 23 years old,.... no, id be very surprised if he went straight into Major League Baseball (but that speaks more to the Cardinals depth than to Ragsdale's skill).. yes, there are developmental risk with Frias but the bottom line is we had to get pitching and we had to get starting pitching to eat Innings because the Henderson, Gasser, Crow, Sprout, and Drohan crew haven't built up enough innings. We sold high and we sold from a position of strength....not surprising for Arnold to do that.

We actually get three relievers because I think that, based on reading a former Brewer fanatic article, Sproat will go to the bullpen and maximize his talents once through the lineup.

Yeah the value sucks on paper but I haven't thought about Yophery one damn day since the Quinn Priestor (sp?) trade.

Also Arnold is not operating in a vacuum... he has to justify the trade to ownership and to the scouts....there may have been some pushback but not enough to prevent the trade going through.

I need to go read more about this Colorado kid with the long name.... but I am glad we did something... I just hope it leads to the Cubs flying the L and advancing to the World Series. 🙏

So do we not think Arnold tried this? I’m guessing he did. I doubt our #1 target was May. Or even #2 or #3.

I think we can debate if we gave up too much for May/Romero…but I don’t think it’s debatable that these were the best these prospects could acquire. A little bit more wasn’t magically acquiring a better starter

But Michael Brantley had himself a career. He would have been huge for us. It wasn’t an accident, either.

Similar to some of the arguments for trading Ragsdale, with Brantley there wasn't any place for him.  He was a below-average CF defensively, and they had Braun in LF (as well as Cameron and Gomez in CF).

Going back to the much-maligned car analogy, if you have one sitting there in a garage not doing anything, it's still going to depreciate.  Better to "trade it in" for some value than to lose that value.

Boras was never going to let him be traded to anyone but the Dodgers.  It’s that simple.

For the record, I talked to my boss this morning (Tarik Skubal’s father, by the way.   No, I’m not kidding.). He said from what he heard from Tarik when they spoke on the phone yesterday (Sunday) was that the Tigers asked for Logan Henderson for sure, among other players that he couldn’t remember.  But Henderson was definitely in the deal.

That would have been a big ask, so I get why we didn’t get a deal done.

The front office that has made this small market team into an MLB power. Ok.

This is still.... AWFUL.

"Frias is a freak with crazy bat speed and physical projection; the guy on the list with the best shot to have a Junior Caminero-type of rise."

You just can't trade these types of players UNLESS you're getting a Yordan Alvarez for 3 playoff runs back.
That's the type of trade you include him in.

And seconds before I even heard about this trade, I said it on another thread, the ONE type of prospect I'm not trading... is a talented young player with a massive upside. That's what Frias is.

I'm also just qualifying the "trade him for that" package for all the "but we have 2 OFers." We have Chourio and Lara is going to be paid like a very good 4th OFer, so... I'm thinking if he came in next year and took the step that was expected of him RIGHT as he's turning 19... the Brewers probably could have found a spot for him.

But hey, we're trying to not bel like the Dodgers. We didn't think it was fair we got all the young LA phenoms.

Chourio, Made, Pena, how many do we really need... I mean, all of them? It's a bit much. So we thought... expiring pitcher. In the division... to the team that REALLY broke our hearts all those years.

Yeah, there's no way I'm trading Henderson for Skubal.

How is any agent for a rental player without any no-trade clause able to not only have veto power over a trade partner but actually determine a singular destination?

This is either completely false or MLB is ruined until the next CBA. If the Tigers are taking an inferior offer to send Skubal to his preferred destination because of agent pressure. If a NTC is essentially pointless because an agent can just strong arm anyway. If any of that is true, there can be no baseball again after 2026 until the system is overhauled.

I'm officially over the complaining stage and have entered the move on stage.

The Brewers traded two prospects out of their deep pool of prospects. If these guys were the next coming of baseball's messiahs and everyone knew it they wouldn't have been traded.

If the Brewers just gave up the next Aaron Judge and non-pitching version of Shohei Ohtani then Matt Arnold should never work in baseball again. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict he'll have a long baseball career.

Brewers are in a good position at this point of the season because if the Brewers went 17-12 (reasonable) the rest of the season it also, means the Cubs would have to go 22-6 to even tie us.

Would you rather have Frias/Ragsdale or Jett/Sproat? I think this was a panic trade (of sorts) that was forced because of the 1-2 punch of the pitching injuries plus trading Peralta.

I didn’t understand the Peralta trade when it happened, and it looks even worse in hindsight since we had to trade away high upside prospects for what roughly a lateral move (Peralta + comp pick vs May). Competing teams should never trade away competent starting pitching unless the return is insane value.  I’d argue that neither Jett nor sproat count as insane value. Because the cost to acquire pitching midseason is punitive for the buyer.

I don’t understand the market at all. Why even sell starting pitchers a year out from free agency if they’re worth just as much at the trade deadline? May as well benefit from them for half the season first.

Control also doesn’t seem to be as coveted anymore. I’d love to say imagine what Drohan would have been worth at the deadline with his control, but maybe nothing more than a few organizational top 30s. I really just don’t know anymore.
