Josh Hader Traded to the Padres

Well if it's perfection you seek, he hasn't been the guy. If you go by postseason, when it counts the most, the Brewers didn't just trade away Mariano Rivera. They traded away a guy who wound up being a mixed bag in the postseason. Does that mean he'll never pile up saves and help a team win it all? Of course not. But it doesn't mean the Brewers can't find someone to do it for them either.

It's also often forgotten that Rivera essentially blew two WS titles in his career, the AZ one and multiple games to Bos to blow the 3-0 lead.  Obviously he's still great and one of the best ever, it just shows even the best aren't perfect.

The debate about Hader's postseason performance is silly, to be honest. You are not going to find many players who will guarantee you better than a 1.88 ERA/1.70 FIP over any stretch of time. It's an objective fact that Hader has stepped up and pitched better in the playoffs than during the regular season, against some very scary offenses like the Dodgers.

The reason he might seem to have "blown" playoff games for us more than normal is that every time we get to the playoffs our offense absolutely falls apart and we make the bullpen try to single-handedly win an entire series of 1-0 games.

DFA Corey Ray

That already happened in June and Ray’s been decent since being outrighted…almost as if a burden was lifted off of his shoulders.

Placing RHP Luke Barker on the 60-day injured list looks like the easy move, in my opinion.

Last year, sure. But definitely not the story in 2019. That game was won and Hader blew it.

Look, Soto isn’t coming to Milwaukee. Get real. There is zero chance that the Brewers could keep him after 2024. He didn’t take $440 mil to stay in Washington; what makes anyone think he’d want to play in Milwaukee? The front office knows that he’d be a rental at best, and the price to land him would be prohibitive. One baseball GM alluded yo it taking a Herschel Walker-type deal. Milwaukee doesn’t have the pieces to pull that off.

If this is it, I’m very underwhelmed. Hader for a prospect with a 45 hit tool and a bunch of arms that don’t really excite me, and Williams moves into the closer role.

While everyone is bagging on Hader’s performance in the post season (a bit unfair, imho), at least he was available. Williams wasn’t because he decided to punch a wall.

Not getting at least one top 100 prospect is incredibly disappointing. I hope the FO isn’t done yet, because of this is it, selling off your closer n the heat of a pennant race, coming off 7 wins in 9 after the All Star Game, shows the team the FO has zero confidence in what this squad can do in October.

I expect the Brewers to make several more moves before the dust settles.

I hope a few more moves are to come for sure - primarily a middle of the order RH power bat to help against lefty starters

I have yet to see a National MLB writer or outlet criticize this trade for the brewers, the sentiment is universally that they got a good return and didn't jeopardize their chances for 2022. FWIW.

I’ll leave the full analysis to the people who follow the minor leaguers, but it’s hard for me to see how this deal by itself improves the Brewers chances this year.

Part of my lack of excitement comes fro having Rogers on a fantasy team and seeing him struggle the last few weeks to the point of losing the closer role. And that doesn’t even cover the comeback win he gifted to the Brewers in June.

Maybe there will be another deal that will make this make sense.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Trade one of the best relievers in baseball for a 31 year old reliever, a 30 year old failed prospect, and then two prospects outside of their top 5?

Is Lamet 30? I remember when he was considered a can’t miss prospect.

You do realize those prospect rankings are 100% arbitrary, right?

Ruiz was going crazy in AA and AAA before being called up to the Padres. There wasn't many offensive performers who had more helium as a prospect through the first half of the season. He also has game-changing type speed. He easily would have been a Top 100 guy at his trajectory.

Yes, Williams punched a wall, we all remember it. But he has just been plain better than Hader this year. And 2 out of the last 3 years.

You know who else struggled in July? His initials are JH.

I know this isn't the topic of the thread, but several posters have mentioned the Narvaez rumor and questioned whether Stearns is giving up on the season. At best, Narvaez is our second best catcher right now behind Caratini. He might even be our #3 catcher behind Severino, and he's going to be a free agent after the season. The only reason not to trade him is that I believe Severino is ineligible for the playoff roster.

We just traded Hader without significantly downgrading our 2022 bullpen, while adding some pieces for the future. The rumors  that we could be moving a catcher who is kind of wasting a roster spot have me intrigued.

For people concerned about Ruiz' hit-tool, his 23 year-old season in AA/AAA has been superior to Frelick, Mitchell, and Wiemer's, with higher BB% than any of them, and lower K% than Mitchell/Wiemer, and comparable to Frelick's.

Chourio wasn't on any lists to begin the season, now he's universally regarded as one of the top prospects in the game. If he doesn't use up his rookie eligibility, Ruiz could be in for dramatic rise in prospect ratings as well.

this year in the minors, esteury ruiz has stolen 60 bases in 69 attempts. the brewers haven't had such a prolific basestealer since jonathan villar, and before that, scott podsednik.

If Ruiz is headed to Nashville and Frelick, Wiemer and Mitchell are all headed there, something else has to be up…

Ruiz has played a good bit of infield right?  That may be a plan

I realize that. But how does this trade improve the Brewers prospects for making or advancing in the playoffs this year.

Rogers at his best has never been as good as Hader at his best and Lamet is nothing special.

Brewers about to turn over their major league roster in a pennant chase? Interesting...

That would be interesting … if they move Narvaez, that is the 40-man roster position needed & Severino (who can’t catch) stays with Caratini being the starter

Could explain Wong being on the block as well. I'd rather they acquire a legit 3B, though, and move Urias to 2B if Wong is dealt.

He is a better CF than he is at 2B.

Seems obvious that one of the catchers has to go, as none of them can get sent to the minors and we aren't going to keep three catchers forever.

Tampa Bay needs a catcher and has an insanely deep farm system. I'd either look for an upside reliever or a mid-range prospect in their system (who would still be quite good). Narvaez is a good player, shouldn't give him away for free.
