This is a fascinating point.

Shea Langeliers.

They obviously loved Ruiz.  It sure does seem that they could've gotten more for Contreras.

I keep waiting to see what other pieces the Brewers had to add to the deal. I don't think there are any.

This is an impressive trade for the Brewers. I never viewed Ruiz as having a bright future and they flipped him for a young catcher who has already proved he can hit MLB pitching.

Can't believe they flipped one of the prospects from the Hader deal into a 24-year old Catcher who has already played in an All-Star game...and is only ~14 months older than the prospect we gave up!

Payamps looks like he should be on the 26 man roster O.D. and he won't be a FA until 2027.
and Yeager has a chance to have a ML career as a reliever as well.

I like these two guys better than all 3 of the guys we got for Renfroe.

Great point, A' could have swapped him to half a dozen teams for twice what we gave up prospect value wise (and no extra piece for us).

Ruiz for Jansen would have been possible to me. We got a younger, cheaper, more controllable player who should fit into our Adames lead core really well. Also if our catching team works their defensive magic he could easily be a 5+ WAR player.

I can't find the Quero quote of what to do with him. That is easy, if he does well this year and next bring him up around halfway through 2024 or so. Contreras should be able to DH A bunch (he did last year). Then in 2025 you have a decision to make if Quero shows out.

As of now, I think the team is better than last year. Let's try and upgrade at 3rd, get one more "A" bullpen guy and some more rotation depth and I will be happy.

The A's aren't dumb. They may have overrated Ruiz a tad or perhaps not. The angle here is clearly their large OF and the return of stolen bases to relevance. Who knows, Ruiz might swipe 100 bags for them in 2023 with the basepaths shortened and the new limit on holding runners. And if he does, I'll still think this is a fantastic trade for Milwaukee given what they're getting in Contreras and the fact that Chourio, Frelick, Mitchell, and Weimer are still in the organizational OF.

I understand your point, but I still think the A's are dumb...or at minimum are making a very dumb trade. But as I said, I do see your point there are aspects they are certainly considering that many here are not.

I'm going to wildly and irresponsibly speculate that Oakland was supposed to be the 3rd team or the next move after the Hader trade and that they really valued Ruiz. It just took however many months to start the deal back up.

The ONLY downside I see to this trade is that a lot of fans are going to raise their expectations of what 'good' trades look like. It will make any future moves a bit of a burden to read these boards. "That's it? We got Contreras + 2 arms for Ruiz and all we got for XX was YY?!"

I'm kidding but I'm not but you know what I mean.

What a day.

Real question is will Ruiz spend more time in Oakland or Vegas?

Exactly. The A's are cheap. They are trying to have the lowest possible payroll while stockpiling prospects for the impending move to Vegas.

This looks great for us.  We get a strong bat, a bullpen arm whose ERA was below 6 last year, and a bullpen prospect.  And give up an outfielder, while we still have three outfielders at the MLB level or ready to debut that look like better prospects than Ruiz at this point, and still may not have the roster spots for them.  If the A's strike gold with Ruiz, good on them.

Big time egg on the face of the BTV site on this one. Huge swing and a miss on Ruiz's value especially.

I mean it is an automated model that takes in publicly available information and spits out a valuation for like 5000 players. It is pretty impressive for what it is, but there are going to be holes. Whether the public info is late on Ruiz or there are flaws in the methodology, clearly the market for Ruiz is higher than the model suggests.

But the tool is still useful as a first approximation.

I don't think BTV is wrong with their valuation on Ruiz or anyone who was traded today.  Sometimes teams make bad trades or perceived to have made a bad trade.  There are many of them like Aramis Ramirez to the Cubs and others that I am probably forgetting right now.

Bad trades happen all the time.  The BTV site isn't perfect but it is the best that we have to guess at what teams are valuing the players as.  It is a good tool to use to figure out trades and values.  It also helps in proofing value or seeing a different value based on how someone else views the information.

It still feels like the part going from the Brewers to the Braves is missing. Something like Black and Zamora.

If its just Ruiz, hard to see how two other teams valued him that high when no one else seems to have.

From the Braves  perspective ……..is 3 years of Sean Murphy really that much  more valuable then 5 years of Contreras?

I guess I just don’t see why they felt they needed to upgrade a position that was already strong.

It is just Ruiz……it’s been confirmed by everyone.

It’s hilarious that this trade seems so good that people still refuse to believe it. Lol
