This seems more like a Blake Perkins move than a move for a starter. The only difference is Perkins had an option left. I seriously doubt they have him penciled in as the starter. He does provide some power off the bench I suppose.

Question for someone who knows how arbitration works. If the Brewers cut bait before the season starts are they on the hook for his salary?

I have defended a lot of the recent moves but this one is a head scratcher.  Bauers has a profile to avoid not acquire.

Maybe the organization wants our expert hitting coaches to draw the inner MVP out of Bauers, as they have with so many of our hitters.

My question as well

To answer the arbitration question:

From: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/details-from-the-new-2022-2026-collective-bargaining-agreement/

Quote

A player who has been tendered an arbitration offer who reached an agreement on a contract before it is heard by the arbitration panel shall be eligible for termination pay if the player is terminated for failing to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability prior to Opening Day. That was not explicitly spelled out in the previous CBA.

Uhm. So what is "Termination pay?" Sounds like something a lot less than the actual salary.

If they settle on an arby salary without having to go to a hearing, that salary is guaranteed.

If history is any guide……the more BF hates it……the better the trade will be! 😉

Indeed. The usual crowd of posters who compete about who can be the most negative about every move the Brewers have made over the 7-8 years I've been visiting this site.

It's not even the negative part I care about; if you come through that conclusion through analysing and legitimately trying to understand a trade that's fine. But it's just the automatic hyperbolic negativity, all the time, that gets me. Trash every move the team has ever made, ignore the majority of the time when you've been dead wrong; live forever on the "glory" of the automatic negativity being right a couple times, never acknowledge how you absolutely trashed the Yelich trade or wished Wade Miley got injured so the team wouldn't add him to the ML roster. No self-awareness at all. Some genuinely believe they'd make better decisions as GM than Stearns/Arnold did.

What bothers me the most is the fact that since we just got this guy, does that mean we have no shot at resigning Santana for another year?

What sense does it make to pay Bauers almost 2 million on top of what it would cost to resign Santana?

I already knew we wouldn't be making a big splash at 1B, so Santana seemed like what we would end up with, now this?  Santana said all the right things about Milwaukee, and since his price tag would be relatively inexpensive, I was really hoping we'd have him back.

I really hate this trade on so many levels.

Guessing they likely don't see much upside with Santana entering his age 38 season. Which is unfortunate because he seems like a great leader and locker room guy who could put up league average numbers at 1B.

It's mostly people who are disappointed because they misread the title and thought we had acquired Jack Bauer.

Since you aren't going to read it, you'll never know if that's true or not.

If the FO sees more in Bauers than Santana this team is in a world of trouble.

You know what you are getting with Santana. Best case given his age, its 20 dingers and an OPS in the mid .700s. Bauers certainly has a lower floor, but he probably is also in close proximity to that ceiling as well.

Why not both?

Good point. Can't imagine Santana is going to be all that pricey.

If the Pirates don’t overpay for Santana, I believe he’ll be back. I’m wanting him back, especially at $7-8M, which is probably what he gets.

4 pages is a lot for Bauers but not exactly a lot to talk about so not real surprising. He actually looked pretty decent through July. Thought he might even be a Brewers target at the trade deadline with the way Winker/Tellez and the 1B/DH castoffs were playing. Would absolutely take 232/314/497/811 out of Bauers which he was through July. However, August and September happened and he was absolutely brutal, can't hit much worse than that and struck out over 40% of the time.

I'm pretty perplexed on this one. Bauers' had solid underlying numbers last year but has not been good in his MLB career. Brewers must have been lower on Avina than I would have imagined.

I'm late to this one, but I loved Avina. I know he had a loooong way to go and it was a long shot, we have a lot of OFers, all of that. But that swing was so pretty and the power so easy, I just would have liked to have kept him.

But my prospect evaluation has sucked compared to the Brewers, so...I'll defer to them.

Depends what on your definition of “pricey”.

I would bet Santana won’t sign with anyone until after Rhys Hoskins finds a new home.
Using Hoskins’s salary as leverage and Santana’s own performance in ‘23, he probably looks for 10+ million dollars. While not “pricey” in the grand scheme of things, Milwaukee simply doesn’t go after players at that price often.

And like every other thread over 2 pages, it has bobbed and weaved around through many other players. 😉

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

The Mets message board thread would have been 8 pages, but since Attanasio is cheap, we only get 4 pages.
