2x Tommy John. There's no guarantee he ever pitches effectively again. But if a team wants to risk $500 million on it they can go right ahead. This contract has disaster written all over it.

2X Tommy John is in no way a death sentence nowadays. See Eovaldi, Nathan. And who else is going to give you value on the mound in addition to having an MVP caliber bat?

If anything, his bat is insurance against the contract turning into a "disaster". You're probably one on the few on earth who legitimately thinks this.

My coworker in Canada said ohtani is getting 600/10 years, and since he's Canadian, I have to believe him.  Canadians can't lie

His name and bat alone is probably worth $300-400M. One wonders what kind of pitching incentives are going to be in this contract...

I do think the Mariners are crafty if they did offer him that rumored 1 yr / $65 M contract.

If I were Ohtani, I'd go straight to Japanese media whenever the decision is made after how the American press has handled this.

I'm not surprised this has turned into a sugar-honey-iced-tea show.  That is the American media for you.

I should put a picture on Twitter...

And also commit a lot of war crimes.  Do not anger the nice Canadians.......

Please note the war crimes thing is a running joke about Canadians in the military.

Hopefully Blue Jays or Giants land him but Dodgers feel like an inevitability.

I've always thought the Giants made the most sense. They'd been looking for the next face of their franchise...they've been pretty good in this regard with Bonds, MadBum/Posey, but they missed on Judge, Correa and others.

The Asian population in SF would seemingly also help, plus the park, staying on the West Coast, all those factors. I mean, if you get to pick from all these areas while making 500-600M(or more)...I'm not picking the Cubs and that dilapidated stadium or the weather.

I'm guessing SF, LAD, and Tor...which may be stupid at this point as I know he's visiting Tor today. ,

Yeah, but it still carries alot more risk than pitchers who have had only 1 TJ surgery...arms aren't designed to throw 100 mph longterm, and Ohtani's frame has proven to be susceptible to elbow injuries.

Ohtani truly is a transcendent talent, but I do think he should transition his career towards DH or become a 1B/OF to avoid additional arm problems that cause hike to miss more time in the future.  The issue is he won't do that until after this massive contract that pays him like he's an annual Cy young and HR champ threat for 10+ seasons is signed, which just isn't realistic.  That's why this deal will look bad in the second half of it.

Not even sure why anything hinges on this guy.  The amount of money only involves what, 3 teams realistically, why does he have anything to do with a guy like Hoskins signing, or the other free agent pitchers for that matter.

It's possible that agents for those players have contingency deals in place with those teams in the event that those teams do not sign Ohtani.  $50M+/year, or whatever his market rate is, can buy multiple players if they strike out on Ohtani.

Nathan Eovaldi is one of the few pitchers to come back effectively from 2x TJ surgery. The overall record is not good. If Ohtani were signing a 1 or 2 year deal it would be a different story. We do not know how effective he will be as a pitcher in the future.

BTW - After his 2nd TJ surgery Eovaldi was released by the Yankees and then signed to a 1 year deal for $2 million by the Rays, which is a massively different level of risk.

I have heard in general that part of this is offset by the amount of additional revenue he brings in but haven’t really seen how much. Is it $2 million or $20 million? If it is closer to the latter, that would provide some insurance if he has to give up pitching and move to right field.

Lotta money for a guy with a .000 batting average in the postseason.

Guess that means he has a 0.00 ERA though too.

Austin Hedges to Guardians - 1 year at $4 million

So glad he didn’t sign with the Brewers

Isn’t he friendly with Pat Murphy?

Hopefully we sign Peyton Henry as our backup C for this year as we await Jefferson Quero in 2025
