Sorry if this has come up before and I missed it. A number of discussions I’ve seen have talked about being able to offer Hoskins a qualifying offer if he opts out. I have a dim memory that sometimes teams agree not to offer the QO in that situation as a condition of the contract. Has anyone seen anything reported about that possibility with the Hoskins contract?

Nothing's been reported about the details of his contract yet so it's unknown if there is such a deal. Wouldn't shock me if there was, wouldn't shock me if there weren't. In Hoskins's mind I'm sure he expects he'll be in a good position to decline a QO and still get signed somewhere for a big contract. I think there's a good chance there's no QO agreement looming over the Brewers.

One thing I've been thinking about is the 2nd year player option.  Whether Hoskins exercises the option or opts out is obviously based on how 2024 goes.  We all assume he opts out if he has a good 2024.

The thing that is kind of interesting to me is if he has results that make him inclined to stay with MKE for 25.  There's 2 ways to look at that scenario.  Yes it's somewhat of a risk for the Brewers in that it could cause them to be paying out the full contract.  But another way of looking at is is that it could also turn out to be risk protection.  If Hoskins is mediocre to poor in 24, my guess it would be associated with injuries or what have yous.  What are the odds he'd have 2 bad seasons in a row?  I prefer to look at it like if he has a down year in 24 at least we get to recoup in 25 where he hopefully has a much better season.  It'll be interesting to see how it plays out...

Looks like they’re finally “unretiring” Gantner’s # and giving it to Hoskins. Per the official roster….

Never mind the website was in error…

The unofficial retiring of Gantner's number might be the most unserious thing I've ever seen. Either retire his number or don't. He retired 30 freaking years ago. Enough with this madness.

For real.

Of the 320 players that have racked up 6,000 plate appearances since Gantner debuted in 1976 he ranks 301st with an 87 wRC+ and 280th with 19.5 WAR.

His two closest comps are Eric Young Sr. with a 94 wRC+ and 19.8 WAR or Adam Kennedy with an 88 wRC+ and 18.3 WAR over that stretch.

I guess he maybe holds the distinction of being the longest tenured, most mediocre single franchise player in history?

wonder if that going to happen more with Fa  asking for a 1 Year Deal . I wish the Crew has one more deal like that maybe for another Corner hitter

…Justin Turner… DH, but play a little 1B, 3B maybe even a taste of 2B in a pinch like last year

Awesome. So 1/16. 2/34 or a chance for 3/48.  It'd be great for him to be worth right around 20M a season to not have him opt out and just accept a chance at 3years now.

12M for this season gives that 6-8Mil signing a chance if we're looking at Turner.(though I want Black to be on this team majority of season).  Just saying 12M vs 17M leaves that wiggle room.

This franchise loves celebrating mediocrity doesn't it.

The Packers do this exact same thing with the #1 & #5. If you aren't going to issue the number then honor that player officially and put their name on the wall. Otherwise that number should be fair game. Curly Lambeau, Paul Hornung, Jim Gantner, Ryan Braun, etc.

MLB trade rumors says they can offer a QO:

Quote

If Hoskins picks up where he left off before the injury, he’d likely join Burnes and Adames on next year’s free agent market. As with Burnes and Adames, Hoskins would be a candidate for a qualifying offer if he exercises the opt-out. He remains eligible for the QO since Philadelphia opted against the offer this winter. Milwaukee doesn’t have to forfeit any draft picks to add him.

They also do it with #52...oh, wait, they gave that out immediately!

Seriously, 4 players, 3 great ones, 2 who made an incredible mark on their sport, a former MVP.

The only reason I can see for Gantner is that he's part of the best trio in terms of most hits for the same team. That's...pretty much it. His Molitor and Yount association.

Gantner is the ultimate third wheel. He wasn’t just mediocre; he was an albatross. He was a decent player in his 20s. Then he stuck around forever and the Brewers indulged him, so they never bothered to look for a 2b who could actually help them win games — which they rarely did over the rest of his career. One of my all-time least favorite Brewers.

I think that is a bit harsh. Many of those years from 85-91 he was 4th or 5th among Brewers position players in WAR. He fell squarely into the “could be improved upon but hardly the biggest problem” category.

Jesse Winker comes to mind. Granted Hoskins injury has a better track record of total recovery but, as Dave Bakhtiari shows, it isn't totally out of of the realm of possibility that it lingers.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Contract details.

Maybe I need someone to explain buyouts to me.

So 1 yr at $12mil w/ $4 mil buyout if opts out (so $16mil total). But if he opts in next year is $18mil. So if he opts in he doesn't get the $4mil and we are then in a 2yr contract for $30mil total, correct?

The option for 3rd year is 4m. So it's still 2/34 in that instance only 4 is on the hook that 3rd yr if both sides don't agree.

For all parties involved it is probably best if it end up being a 1 year deal for $16 million. If he exercises that 2025 contract something went wrong/

In the second year he gets $18M + $4M buyout for the Mutual Option (assuming that does not happen).  So total contract value is $34M for 2 years.  Its a 1yr $16M if he opts out of the second year.  In the highly unlikely event the mutual option occurs, then he gets $48M over three years ($12M, $18M, $18M) with no buyout paid.

Its an attempt by the Brewers to defer some of the money.  I was hoping for this, because they should have more money in 2025 when Burnes and Adames go off the books.

I like this signing even more now that we know the terms.

Gumby was fun … he rivaled Yogi Berra for awkward quotes - referred to as Gumbyisms!

This trio (Molitor, Yount, & Gantner) played together longer than any MLB trio in history - 15 years, I believe.
