Voit (back) to the Mets on a minors deal. I'm sure it's not out of the norm for a guy to sign a bunch of players that he had signed when he ran his old team but Stearns seems to be collecting a bunch of guys who did nothing in Milwaukee.

Anyone else think this one is a little odd? Seems like a lot of commitment for a catcher. I realize the money means nothing, but is he still going to be even average in 5 years?

For 95% of the teams in baseball I would say that's a suspect deal. But when you print money like the Dodgers it doesn't really matter.

I think it's more when you're allowed to defer money to avoid luxury taxes like the Dodgers do it really doesn't matter.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

If you took the under on # games before Royce Lewis got hurt you win.

Good: Jesse Winker lines a single to right.

Bad: Tries to turn it into a ‘hustle double’

"Hustle" and "Jesse Winker" do not go together.

I'm not going to engage in any further discussion on this specific point beyond this post, as I don't mean to derail the thread, I just want to provide additional context, but for those that want to see how the Ohtani signing wasn't a luxury tax dodge, there are some good explanations out there including this piece: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/why-shohei-ohtanis-contract-structure-is-not-a-luxury-tax-dodge.html

Justin Steele leaves early after injuring himself fielding a bunt. Looks like a potentially serious hamstring injury.

Feel sorry for him because he's a great pitcher, but not for Cubs fans.

Looks like a very major injury.

Well that's certainly an unfortunate revelation. Someone brought up in the comments that Corbin Carroll signed an extension before the season last year, but since he debuted in 2022 he still earned the Diamondbacks a pick with his Rookie of the Year campaign. Seems like a goofy thin line to walk. Guess we should have brought Chourio up for a game last September just to avoid this situation?

Umps gift Cubs the lead with a blown foul ball call.

I don't get why there can't be an ump in a booth or NY that takes a 5 second look at that between pitches and says yeah foul ball. What's the point of having review if it can't be used on game changing obvios plays.
