True.

As long as it's not the crazy numbers that were being discussed here in November.

Yeah, I don't think it will be. First, the Brewers are relatively frugal. Second, it's a shoulder injury, one of the lower return-to-previous-performance injuries in a pitcher. I think the 2025 salary will be somewhere in the $13-17m range.

There's really no way this is a contract that is so expensive that it will impact us in a significant way

I'm not sure I agree.  What do you think the numbers will be?

I honestly don't have any idea personally, but if it's 17MM next year (as Brock threw out), that could definitely hurt the team if he's hurt/bad.

Sad to see this thread isn't just people celebrating the Brewers bringing back a fan favorite and one of the best pitchers in franchise history.

No way we'd be giving him 17M in this deal, is there?  Maybe he could earn that much with incentives, but there certainly won't be 17M in guaranteed $$, right?  That would seem insane to me, considering how difficult it is for pitchers to come back from shoulder injuries like this.

And, for the record - I absolutely LOVE the signing.  Just questioning how much we'll actually give him in guaranteed money.

I will celebrate when I know the details of the contract which are kind of important for an injured pitcher.

Why?

I'm happy he's back but the financials matter obviously.

this team in 2025 keeps looking better and better.  Get the young guys all the experience they need this year!

Maybe he is getting the Shohei deferral to lighten the hit. A couple mil a year for five years. He gets some cash, Brewers don’t take a big hit

I'm not really bothered about the financial side of it. Firstly because I don't think this would've happened if it was big money. Secondly, with so much of the Brewers squad being pre-arb or early in arbitration in 2025, there is plenty of room to take a chance even with a decent chunk of money. A (essentially) one year deal doesn't carry much risk, you know how that money fits into your budget, you know what/who else would be available to spend it on.

I also really like Woody as a player and as a Brewer overall, and my delight for this will overshadow it being a slight overpay (if it even is).

Generally good news, depending on the money of course.   I'd thought a few weeks ago this seemed more and more likely as a possibility.  And who knows, if the team is hanging around in the race he could be a good 'trade deadline' acquisition for the stretch.  Otherwise just get ready for '25

Honestly, there isn’t any downside here.

#1 It is a one year deal (basically) and our payroll is not that high in 2025. There is basically no way it would stop if from making any other move, either long or short term.

#2 I am pretty confident this move was largely pushed by Mark Attanasio opening his wallet to give the green light.

Even if we gave him $20mil for ‘25, it just really affects nothing for the payroll or how we can compete. If he blows, Attanasio’s bank account is the only thing taking a hit.

2025 seems like a pretty good "go for it" year to me. The young guys will mostly be hitting their prime at that point.

Correct. And $15 million could go a long way towards signing F/A's etc. Thats one big FA or two smaller ones.

My fingers are very crossed the Woodruff guarantee money is in the $5 million range and not $15 millionish. Of course, incentives are a completely different story.

Good point. 2025 payroll will be extremely low with Adames leaving and assuming Hoskins opts out.

I  think everyone appreciates what Woodruff has contributed to the Brewers up until now. However, I think people are just being forward looking and can't blame them for having some concerns if he will be able to bounce back from the injury and how much the Brewers committed for this contract. I guess we will see.

Hard to say but probably in the 2m to 8m range of guarantees. It's not nothing but it's barely some fringe money for sub replacement level player(s) over 2 years. I'll raise an eyebrow if it comes out at $15m+.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Hendriks got 10 mil guaranteed in his 2 year deal while being out this year with TJ, so I would think Woody will get like 12-15 guaranteed.

Yeah I'd guess something similar to Hendriks, with at least $10-15 million guaranteed and incentives that would bring his 2025 salary up to $20 million or so.

Though I imagine the Brewers would have offered something like that early on, so the fact that he took this long to sign might suggest he couldn't find what he was looking for elsewhere and maybe settled for a lighter deal.

Yeah but ace SP have drastically higher value if fully recovered.

However, I wouldn’t bet on a full recovery. It might take years if even at all.
