Dr. Z will start us on the right path to victory!  You will see!

We will Steele this win and toss the Cubs in the trash bin!

Counsell was once a winner; now he's a has-been!

Hey, did you hear? The Brewers have used 16 starting pitchers already this year. Here is the Team Record by starting pitcher through the first 101 games...

THE MAINSTAYS (32-19)
Freddy Peralta (13-7)
Colin Rea (12-5)
Tobias Myers (7-7)
[Even with Peralta not being nearly ace-y enough, they've pulled through just fine in his starts. Team loves to play for Rea apparently, went 14-8 in his starts last year. Tobias has been a stabilizing force, and got the best run support of the three, but only a 7-7 record because that's how baseball be sometimes.]

UNBEATABLE BOB (5-0)
Robert Gasser (5-0)
[Remember those five glorious Bob Gas starts?]

THESE GUYS SUCK (6-2)
DL Hall (3-1)
Dallas Keuchel (3-1)
[The power of run support and bullpen.]

THE OPENERS (5-3)
Jarred Koenig (3-2)
Rob Zastryzny (1-1)
Hoby Milner (1-0)
[Strategy has worked more often than not with the three losses coming by a combined four runs.]

THE BACK ENDERS (8-13)
Bryse Wilson (4-5)
Joe Ross (3-6)
Aaron Civale (1-2)
[Ate some innings, but can't win em all.]

THE SPOT STARTERS (2-6)
Carlos Rodriguez (0-3)
Aaron Ashby (0-2)
Wade Miley (1-1)
Jakob Junis (1-0)
[Various combinations of called up, sent down and/or injured slash recovering from injury.]

All told the first four groupings have started 72 games with the Brewers going 48-24 (.667 W%) in those games, while the last two groupings have started 29 games with the Brewers going 10-19 (.345 W%) in those games.

Now that Jackson Chourio is on a 3-WAR pace, here’s the list of players since 1961 (expansion era) with a 3-WAR season at age 20 or younger (h/t Brew Crew Ball):

Juan Soto (twice)
Bryce Harper (twice)
Ken Griffey Jr. (twice)
Álex Rodríguez
Mike Trout
Ronald Acuña Jr.
Carlos Correa
Tony Conigliaro
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Jason Heyward
Andruw Jones
Adrián Beltré
Johnny Bench
Manny Machado
Joe Torre
Claudell Washington
Butch Wynegar
Roberto Alomar
Wander Franco (eek)
Elvis Andrus
Édgar Rentería

That list is bananas. The floor is long-term really good major leaguer, and the ceiling is Olympus. I’m not putting Cooperstown hype on him just yet, but with Yelich potentially out for a very long time (Murphy’s press pool answer sounded funereal, and reports are Yelich has a date with a specialist—not great), now would be a good time for Chourio to lean towards the top end of that list.

What was Steele thinking? He had all day to pick that ball up and still get Hoskins.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Big opportunity missed, but I suppose we should be ecstatic about scoring one run against a Cubs starter.

Terrific to get one run out of three bases loaded at bats. Expecting a different result with Mitchell is probably not the right move at this point.

Even as of today, according to Fangraphs, Chourio sits at 1.6 WAR. Worst career with at least that much this young is Rick Manning. Just keep Chourio away from Dennis Eckersley and all should be good.

The opener strategy is a big fail today.

No, we got through an inning just fine.

edit:  And good job by Bryse to get through the 2nd.

Perhaps a bit too hasty.

When you’re scoring one run a game you can’t afford to be giving one right back. But my post came after the opener put 2 men on to start the second

They got away with trying to squeeze another few hitters out of the “starter” after he threw so many pitches in the first. Wilson got out of it, but I don’t think it’s ideal to have the guy you’re counting on to throw 4-6 innings have to come right in to a high leverage situation.

I’m not a fan of the opener strategy in the first place, and in my book today was a fail.

We’ve scored 3 runs in 22 innings so far. We are extremely fortunate to still be in a position to win this series although my confidence in that is dwindling quickly.

Steele straight up for Contreras. Who says no? Both under team control through 2027. Fills Brewers  need for a starting pitcher, fills Cubs need for frontline catcher. Both teams have depth to offset immediate loss.

So the opener is only a successful strategy if no one gets on base?
