Good deal for the Cards I think.

Agree, really like that trade for STL. Glad Edman is out of the NLC as he was always a pain in the backside against MKE.

Would have liked the Brewers to get Fedde as I thought he was the most realistic target to upgrade the rotation for this year and next

Pham is trash, probably a throw in to balance off $ or something.  Not sure of Pham's contract, but I can't stand that guy.

It's looking more & more like we won't be picking up another starter unless something unexpected falls into our lap, which is doubtful. I wonder if there are concerns about Sonny Gray in STL, he's been cuffed around pretty good in recent starts.

I imagine the prospects the White Sox are getting is a lot, and the Cardinals are paying the highest price as they got the most value. That said, I've been very anti-Fedde all year. Primarily I think he is at his absolute peak right now and I'm not buying his improvement from pre-Japan. The Cardinals also don't have jedi-Molina over there anymore to make every pitcher be good.

Am I the only one that thinks the Cards are performing highway robbery here?  This feels somewhat similar to our 3-way deal where we got Contreras AND Payamps for Ruiz.  I'm not saying that Fedde is going to impact the Cards as much as Contreras will for us over their time with their respective organizations, but this just feels like the White Sox and Dodgers failed to take a second look at this deal and didn't realize how little the Cardinals were actually giving up.  Feels like the Cards at least should have had to give up one of their top 10 prospects to the Sox in this deal...no?

Definitely feels like they should have added a prospect to Chicago in this deal. Edman is good but he might be a total non-factor this season coming off wrist surgery where he's struggled big time on his rehab assignment.

Edman is a really good player, he’s just been injured all year and is under control through through 2025. So the Cardinals did give something significant up.

They got two players back who may be impactful then again maybe not.

Pham is Pham he’s not bad at anything but isn’t particularly good at any one thing either.  He would only be an upgrade for the Cardinals because Dylan Carlson and Siani have been that bad.

Maybe Fedde is the next Miles Mikolas who goes to Korea and learns how to pitch and makes it last. Then again he was out of the majors less than a year ago because he wasn’t a good enough player. So there’s certainly some volatility there

Pretty much comes down to one's valuation of Edman.

Dodgers appear to believe he'll be able to bounce back to some semblance of the form his displayed from 2021-23 posting 96 wRC+ | +16.6 BsR | +35.3 DEF | 10.7 WAR over that stretch.

Texas is six games out of the WC, Toronto is 7.5 out.  Still have Kikuchi, Eovaldi, Heaney available.

And that Max Scherzer guy.

Flaherty was scratched from his start tonight...I'm guessing it's the Dodgers, but I can hope...

Obviously you sign a guy and hope he leads you to certain heights ... but I low key love these kind of chess moves when they work out. Sign a guy on a 1yr deal for reasonable money, he pitches himself into being a top target at the deadline and (tbd) you get a nice haul for him and end up only paying 60-70% of the money owed. Fun way to restock your farm system if it works.

I can't get to worked up about that. Erceg had time to show he could turn that corner, but never got there with us. Maybe he does the same for us if still around or maybe for all the pitching labs excellence there was something he needed to do differently with someone else. The overall pattern of the organization is that players generally get a fair chance and they are constantly trying to find guys at the back end of the roster who can do pretty good things.

Yeah, would have loved it if Erceg could have figured it out with us but it's a lot easier to give a guy with a career 5.9 BB9 in the minors a shot when you are losing 112 games like the A's did last year versus winning 92 like the Brewers did.

Going back to last year the Brewers bullpen win probability added is +20.70, first in MLB by a longshot with CIN in second all the way down at +11.61, so they've been in an elite class of their own without him.

If nothing else, this gives the Brewers another chance to get into a fight with Pham.

Cards better get their fantasy football draft in before he shows up.

July 29: Red Sox acquire RHP Quinn Priester from Pirates for INF Nick Yorke

Given the recent Pirate history of trading away pitching, I expect Priester to become a Cy Young candidate.

True, & I'd be OK with it. I just wonder if their focus has turned away from that just a bit in light of adding a pen arm & Yelich being out.

But the last 24 hours before the deadline is an eternity. You certainly can't rule anything out.

Not a big fan of his either, but he always seemed to get big hits against us!
