32‑year‑old first baseman Rhys Hoskins has batted .242/.340/.428 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs through 82 games this season. On July 5, he exited a 4–2 loss to the Marlins after jamming his left thumb tagging out a runner. X-rays were negative, but the MRI revealed a grade 2 sprain, and he’ll require a stint on the 10-day injured list. Hoskins has a hard‑hit rate of 45.8% and a wOBA of .334.

Grade‑2 thumb sprains typically sideline MLB players for 2–4 weeks. Aroldis Chapman missed about three weeks with a similar right thumb sprain in 2023, while infielder Xander Bogaerts was also out roughly three weeks after a grade‑2 left thumb sprain in 2021.

Called up to Milwaukee to replace Hoskins is Andrew Vaughn, who has an OPS of .838 in 65 plate appearances in Triple-A Nashville. He was recently acquired in trade from the Chicago White Sox.

Hoskins reportedly has a grade 2 thumb sprain……internet information says that’s a 4-6 week injury.

I injured both thumbs playing softball many years ago………they swelled up like a balloon.

Hope Vaughn takes this opportunity and runs with it. Then you have some right handed and left handed thump coming off the bench in Hoskins and Bauers.

No real reason to think that Vaughn is going to come up and rake, but Hoskins hasn’t done much lately anyway. So, let’s see what we get. Anything north of a .750 OPS would be gravy.

Logical choice.  Will let us know whether Vaughn and/or Bauers are worth tendering next year.  There aren't any alternatives standing out that are currently in the organization.

I hope he does too, But I don't see a scenario where Hoskins, Bauers & Vaughn are all on the active roster. Maybe, if they're good with Yelich playing some LF--he looked OK out there on Sunday--but even then you're still scary thin in CF & RF. Blake Perkins really needs to get his arse healthy & back up here.

Didn't Dalbec have better numbers?  (Then he goes and strikes out 5 times Sunday.  Ouch.)

Luke Adams is intriguing, but he’s still likely a year away.

Tyler Black has crossed into “not a viable prospect” territory for me.

Dalbec isn’t on the 40 man.  And yeah his strikeout percentage is brutal so he’s probably your quintessential AAAA player.

I just watched this (both Major League 1 and 2) yesterday after the ballgame. 😏

And his AAA numbers are terrible right now anyway.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I will be very very happy if he could carry a .242 avg with some power.  Exact same #'s as Hoskins.

This was the ideal scenario for Black to get 20-ish games of regular playing time but of course he has a .438 OPS in AAA.

Ditto Martinez. After his fantastic season in '24 this would have been his chance.

Good opportunity to see if Vaughn's improvements are worth anything in MLB

Hoskins looks like he'll be out on the long side of the recovery time, now saying six weeks. That puts the Brewers well past the trade deadline, almost to the end of August. Do you just roll with Vaughn or is this something you try to fix at the deadline?

You haven’t even factored in that Hoskins will have a freak accident involving a bag of sunflower seeds and the bat rack in his final rehab start, delaying his return by two weeks.

Probably depends on how Vaughn plays, but I'd definitely be interested in getting one of O'Hearn or Naylor. Thumb injuries are tricky. Feel like even when players get back from them their hitting can be impacted.

I don't mind short term rolling with Vaughn, but this is definitely a situation where I'd take Matt's advice from an article late last week and be prepared to go big. If we could find a significant 1st base answer for now and the next few years go for it.

Vaughn has a 3-week audition before they have to make a decision.  Should be plenty of time.

Thumb injuries, like wrist injuries, can linger in a swing for quite awhile. And while it’s technically possible for Vaughn to surprise us, I’m counting on him sucking.

Vaughn will probably settle in at a level that doesn’t fix anything, but he’s just been very instrumental in winning two games against the Dodgers. He struck the main blow against Yamamoto. His rbi tonight got us on the board, and Hoskins wouldn’t have made that game-saving play in the sixth. Even if this is the end of Vaughn’s good run, I’m happy about the trade. We dealt from surplus to get a guy who has helped. If he craters, we have other stopgaps to try.

Fans love that Passan recently said (paraphrasing) he believes MIL needs one big bat to be a serious WS contender. Well... now they need two. The unfortunate timing of Hosk's injury has a big ripple effect. It was enough of a stretch debating whether or not MIL would (or should) make a significant trade to upgrade the power on offense already, and where (3B, SS, OF?) That issue still remains. Now we're speculating about them also trading to fix 1B if Vaughan is mediocre. I don't see it happening. If anything, I think Hoskins getting hurt made Arnold's decision to dance with the girl he brought easier. The amount of prospect capital needed to add not 1 but 2 meaningful bats is too steep of a cost, There is an outside chance they catch some bottled lightning with Vaughan however which reverts the scenario back to pre Rhys thumb injury.
