When was the last time an NFL head coach was retained because a buyout was prohibitive?  There may be examples, I can't think of one.  Also, how many NFL coaches get fired after year one of a multi-year deal?  Seems to me there are plenty of examples of those.  I don't think the length of extension means anything.  Gutekunst and/or LaFleur could each get a 5 year contract, and if the team goes 5-12 in 2026, both of those guys would be fired (and in the case of the head coach, maybe before the season was over).

If they were willing to eat 30 million or whatever next offseason by firing him I don't know what the holdup is on an extension. If they sign him through 2030 I would expect he gets a VERY long leash to get to at least 28, that just seems like how the Packers do business. I get your point, just not sure it applies to the Packers like it does most other teams. I do agree it should.

For whatever it’s worth, the reporting this morning is that the team still wants an extension with LaFleur. Maybe it’s all distraction, maybe they’re stringing things along because a team might actually be interested in trading for him, I don’t know, but I doubt it.

If they run this back with the same staff, I think I’m out next year for my own good. I’ll record the games and watch a non-frustrating win if I have the time, or have it on as background, but I’m not subjecting myself to this anymore. The culture is ruined, the players know it and are saying it publicly (see Quay Walker), and extending LaFleur now is the height of folly.

You are incorrect on the players..see below :

Javon Bullard with a sentiment felt throughout the #Packers locker room today regarding Matt LaFleur’s future. “He’s our coach, and we wouldn’t want nothing more than for him to be here. He’s the only coach I’ve had in the league, and we’ve been winning.”

I would imagine players are almost always sticking up for coaches though. If it was bad enough that players were saying "yeah, maybe it's time for a change," the coach would probably have already been fired already.

If you ask me how my boss is getting along while he's still my boss, you're sure to get a glowing review.

A little bit apples and oranges. Parsons gets paid either way, so he has no incentive to be diplomatic the way you and I would at our jobs (unless of course you’re also a pro athlete with a huge guarantee)

That's true to some extent, but he still has to work with him every day. No player is going to trash the coach unless the relationship is past the point of no return.

Still, I agree he didn't need to be that effusive, so it would be reasonable to conclude he's completely sincere.

You also want to look like your a team player as you get ready for that next contract. So yes you publicly say supportive things. You may also get traded or want to sign with his next team, etc.

I don’t know much about Gannon other than he seemed to be a really bad HC. But I’m assuming he must have been a pretty good DC to get that gig in the first place. Hopefully one of those much better coordinator than coach types,

When he was the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia (league rankings)-

2021-

yards allowed = 10, points allowed = 18, takeaway = 26

2022-

yards allowed = 2, points allowed = 10, takeaway = 4

As a head coach in Arizona

2023-

yards allowed = 25, points allowed = 31, takeaway = 27

2024-

yards allowed = 21, points allowed = 15, takeaway = 20

2025-

yards allowed = 27, points allowed = 29, takeaway = 19

Well this isn't surprising considering LaFleur's repeated gush fest pre and post-game facing those pesky Cardinals. I have no idea how this will work out. I can say there aren't many men with as diametrically opposite a speaking and engagement impact as Hafley. We all grew to love Hafley's incredible charisma, public speaking etc. Gannon has appeared to be as awkward as they come - with players and the media. Suddenly, LaFleur - with his repeated ad nauseam talking points and lack of clean oratory delivery - becomes the much more favorable interview which is in and of itself...something? Anywho. Whatever. Our win is: at least it's not Joe Barry!

I think this is one of those: industry circles love the hire for the Packers. Packers fans are underwhelmed - honestly, should read <traumatized generally by the Packers>.

According to Demovsky, staff changes aren't finished on LaFleur's staff. We shall see what it looks like when all the dust settles.

Put me down for “cromulently whelmed” on Gannon. Should be solid, but that was kind of the floor anyway on a defense with Parsons, Cooper, and our safeties. If he can make the group great (which is also a Gute problem, to be clear) remains to be seen.

Certainly could have been worse. We could have gotten Eberflus.

Seems like Packers fans dislike this one more than the pundits. I wonder if that's because of Leonhard? Anyway, I am keeping an open mind.

It's because we are constantly let down by this team with their underachieving on the field and this organization to ever make the right personnel decisions. I know compared to past DCs we've had before that they make Hafley look like Buddy Ryan, but this year's defense still had its warts, and you could argue that last year's defense was better than this year's despite adding Parsons. IMO that's true. I just don't trust this organization anymore to ever fix what has been ailing this team for so many years, namely our defense and special teams. Why is Bisaccia still our special teams coordinator? Like I've said after the reports of MLF eventually getting extended, I have no faith and expectations for this team going forward for the first time since the Infante era. If we're lucky, they'll continue to be a fringe playoff team, and that doesn't even seem like a good thing since we'd be constantly stuck with first round draft picks somewhere in the 20s.

I'm over the whole Leonhard thing. The guy is consistently getting passed over for a reason.

That's like picking between hog manure and horse manure.

The Giants are reportedly hiring Dennard Wilson as DC.

I had the impression the Packers hired Gannon because he was only a day or two away from being hired by somebody else, the Packers kinda liked him so they had to move really quickly and didn't really have anyone else in mind.
