I just left my Brewers hideout to scope that 'Merican League Wild Card race. One word: Yikes. What an absolutely brutal finish for the Royals and Twinkies.

Game of Runs, Season of Streaks

Royals Highpoint
0827: 75 W - 58 L
since: 8 W - 16 L

Twins Highpoint
0817: 70 W - 53 L
since: 11 W - 23 L

Tigers Lowpoint
0704: 43 W - 49 L
since: 44 W - 26 L

DBacks Lowpoint
0531: 25 W - 32 L
since: 62 W - 39 L

Padres Midpoint
0719: 50 W - 50 L
since: 41 W - 16 L

Mets Lowpoint
0602: 24 W - 35 L
since: 63 W - 35 L

Orioles Highpoint
0707: 57 W - 33 L
since: 30 W - 37 L

Astros Lowpoint
0508: 12 W - 24 L

The Brewers have had a few bad weeks here and there no doubt, but looking at some of those splits it definitely seems like their season has been a lot less Jekyll & Hyde in nature compared to most of the other contenders.

That is just so petty.

He has been 5 for September (5 for 43, 12 K, 8 BB, 1 2B, 1 HR, .464 OPS) so I guess that's something. By contrast he went 6 for 9 in his last 3 games in August.

Definitely a hot and cold 2024 season for Rowdy. image.png.e69eeb1a273d710b4681356816d2b1b6.png

Hot summer and ice cold April, May & Sept.

Still, I think he probably earned that bonus if he was good enough to stick around until the last week of the season. Though I suppose an argument could be made he finished slightly below replacement value (-0.4 bWAR, -0.5 fWAR) while making $3.2 million this season.

He's been slightly better than Jake Bauers but was paid $2M more than Bauers.

This seems pretty short-sighted by the Pirates. Sure, they save 200K this year, but does this move them down even further for a potential FA signing spot? It just seems very spiteful to do. I wonder if Tellez will have some recourse through the Players Association to file a grievance.

Hader with the 4-out save for the Astros last night.

7th time he's gotten 4 or more outs this year.

Nah, I just washed my hands of the Twins a few weeks ago. If they make it in, great. If they don't, so be it. The Brewers look good and I'm excited to see them in the postseason.

A true Twins Zen Master. A man who has seen some things. A man's man, as it twere. A proverbial fox in the hen house of predictable playoff fandom hand wringing.

Sign him. Give him 4 at bats. Our fans would go crazy. Get him his ring.

If he gets the 4 ABs with us do the Pirates have to pay up?

No, the bonus is not going to happen.

If Tellez clears waivers and then signed with a team as a free agent he would make a pro-rated league minimum salary and the bonus clause dies since it would be a brand new contract.

A team would have to claim him off waivers to take on the contract from the Pirates and if the Brewers (or any other team) did that the last 5 games alone would cost approx. $100K in salary per his existing contract. Then they'd be paying him the extra $200K just for fun, assuming they give him at least 4 at bats, which they definitely wouldn't want to do.

If they were feeling generous they could save $100K and just cut him a check for the $200K as a gift without signing him to their team and it would amount to the same thing.

Either way, the most likely scenario is he goes home a free agent for the remainder of the season and collects the rest of his pay (what remains of the original $3.2M) from the Pirates, minus the bonus.

ETA: I'm not even sure there's enough time left in the season for any of this to happen, I think the waiver period on DFAs is 10 days? He would not be eligible for the postseason for any claiming team.

MLB just totally butchered this whole situation. Also both the Mets and Braves setting their playoff rotation up for the WC round has gone to crap.

I don't know what to do with the knowledge that a massive stroke of luck may have gone in our favor.

If Mother Nature is with us...who could possibly be against us?

Something kind of interesting is that the Diamondbacks lose the tiebreaker to both the Mets and Braves so that second game may still have to be played even if one of the Braves/Mets clinch a playoff spot after the first game.

The national media, who won’t give us any credit if we win the wild card round and blame it all on the weather…

If the Brewers can win a playoff series for the first time since 2018 (when they also got a break because the Rockies had to play both a game 163 and a wild card playoff the next night) I couldn’t care less what the national media says.

Kudos to the Detroit Tigers being on the cusp of a wild card spot. Like the Brewers, a team that nobody picked to make any noise this year.

In fact, they turned it on after being sellers! Hinch probably won’t win Manager of the Year, but hard to argue he didn’t push all the right buttons in the 2nd half.

I mean, cool that the Brewers might benefit from the weather, but let's not forget that a lot of people's lives might get really bad in the next couple days.
