No reason we couldn’t have had both.

Sure but like I said before Shane Smith wasn't going to be starting MLB games without the tweaks that the White Sox made with him. His best pitch is a pitch he never threw with the Brewers, so while we could have kept Shane Smith the one we would have kept isn't the one who has had a successful start to his MLB career.

A bunch of message board dorks thought it was a bad bet. There was nothing reasonable about it.

A bunch of message board dorks think a lot of things that don’t turn out to be true.

This is obviously looking like a miss now……..it happens.

These threads always feel like being in 6th grade where that one friend of yours finds out that you have a bruise on your shoulder so every time he walks by, he punches you on the shoulder and makes the bruise bigger.

It is pretty clear the Brewers made some mistake... bad scouting, planning, hoping he'd slip through, "wait, he wasn't already on the 40 man and we missed the deadline?", etc...

Good luck to Steve.  If we lost one gem, we've also found many gems with the end of the roster churn.

Smith faced the Red Sox for second time and put out somewhat of a clunker: Went 4 2/3, 3 hits, hit 3 batters, walked one and gave up a 3 run homer.

Smith has been great and the White Sox are so flippin' bad there is just so little chance he sees a demotion this year to become available again.. I'm looking forward to the next 10 years of his name being a reference point here in arguments :/

He will stick around for years and years as a reminder that a pretty good FO will make a boneheaded play sometimes

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Would we rather have Smith, pick #33 and Yophery Rodriguez?

I guess...more importantly, does it matter at this point? Not really directed to you, but... 'it is what it is.'

I'd actually wager quite a bit that won't be the case - i think he'll muddle into obscurity in short order due to middling performance and/or injury and wind up on some other team's AAA squad 2-3 seasons from now.  Nothing but my Easter dinner-filled gut to base that on, but I'll stick with it, lol.

I was just looking at Fangraphs probables grid and it looks like we will be facing Shane Smith when we play the White Sox at the end of the road trip that starts tomorrow.

We have every incentive to light him up for 10+ runs that day.

You know, not everybody is tracking every White Sox game all that carefully. If this thread gets bumped up to 25-30 times this year, in order to update folks on Smith’s starts - good, bad, indifferent, no one needs to click for each thread bump but you have that option.

Pretty sure that by season’s end fans who fall on either side of the Smith non-protection debate will have had opportunities to gloat.

I think the "two sides" of this debate are:

  1. The Brewers made a mistake letting him go and I must follow every start Shane makes
  2. The Brewers made a mistake letting him go and I hate regurgitating it!

I'm not sure how either side will gloat... 😬

There is a third side:

3. The Brewers didn't make a mistake, and this person will argue to the death that they are  correct (even though they know they are wrong).

I knew you were there, but didn't think you'd admit it....😂

Yup, I'm sure steroid free too!!  Especially looking at that bald spot he had by like 23 years old.

to this topic, for a team that has been so spot on with pitching lately it is really surprising they made this mistake.   But hey no one is perfect

Maybe but ... I new guys in HS that were loosing there hair at 15-16 years old and weren't even athletes.

Jose Conseco is what a steroid user looks like. image.webp.a8a52157c981d9dcb7c776f66a03211a.webp
