Developed - Devin Williams to the Yankees for Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin

Posted

Devin had another tough outing today and got pulled.

Yankee fans are already complaining………..which is what it is……could be that neither side ends up happy with the big League pieces of the trade…….but we do have Durbin and 6 years to see what he becomes.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t trade those guys. I say trade them earlier like we did with Hader

I’m fine with how they did it……they were trying to win last season and it could be they gauged the trade interest that winter and nobody offered enough for them to pull the trigger.

I think Hader seeming redundant in 2022 with Devin Williams ready to close played a factor.
Milwaukee needs 5+ years of cost controlled talent. In that sense, trading with year of control probably is best.

I can't see any of our free agents getting a comp. at this time. Maybe Woodruff if he is lights out for 15-20 starts but with his extended rehab I don't think the top of the rotation stuff is coming back. If he can get to 93-95 consistently he has some upside to come back but I doubt the 95-98 is going to be back at this point.

I am pretty sure Cortes is going to have to go one 1 year deals, it has been a while since he has been good and/or consistently healthy. Civale is probably in that boat as well.

If Peralta continues the way he has started it is going to be really interesting to see if we trade him. If we got a Burnes like package 3 good pieces, 2 of which are mlb ready current or past top 100 players it would be hard to pass on. I think some of that depends on oh well our young pitchers finish the year Myers, Patrick, Misi, Henderson CarRod, Priester, Gasser, and guys like Wichrowski/Hunt can form a solid rotation but could use an ace. I wish that the team would have tried to extend him this offseason (if they didn't).

Also of note, Devin imploded again last night.

The Yanks stuck him in to start the 8th up 3-1 against the Padres. In 2/3 of an inning the dude gave up a hit and 2 walks before being pulled. All three runs scored and the Yanks lost 4-3.

If this keeps up, the New York faithful will have him tarred and feathered before 4th of July.

I wonder if Devin's agent cries himself to sleep at night thinking about all of the money he's lost. It's only May so there's still time but at the moment he probably would have cost himself less money getting injured.

If we get a package like we got for Burnes, I'd rather just keep Freddy and let him pitch out his contract.  I have no faith in Hall ever getting right, and though Ortiz showed some signs of being decent last year, this year has been a different story.  That trade kind of stinks.

Burnes had a 3.7 fwar last season

Ortiz had a 3.1

Brewers still have many years of control left on Ortiz and Hall……that trade worked out just fine.

Not to mention the money saved on Burnes last season.

This is seeming eerily similar to a Jeremy Jeffress situation. A possible reunion in the future that benefits both parties?

Honestly, I'd pass. He had his dominant moments with us, but would implode at very inopportune times. I honestly don't think he can handle pressure well.

Think he'd still have value as a setup man for the regular season but I agree I wouldn't trot him out for any more postseason/closer appearances.

The way the Yankees are sequencing for Williams makes absolutely no sense to me

Here's how the Brewers used him last year: High up and away to right handers with more fastballs than changeups, and when he dropped that changeup in there off the same tunnel, it finishes in the low and in portion of the strike zone. he could manoeuvre that fastball around the top of the zone, but he needed it to set the tone for him.

Now the Yankees:

Four seamer predominantly up and in to right handers, up and away  left handers which wouldn't tunnel at all with his changeup when he's locating it down on the opposite side of the zone. If I had to hazard a  guess, hitters are picking up which pitch is which really early because they just aren't tunnelling at all, and its causing any contact against him to be loud. Williams had one of the best average exit velocities from 2022-24, but he's getting barrelled up at a big rate this year. Surely the Yankees are smarter than that?

It'd be easier to compare if you had the same pitches on the same sides. I was confused for a bit until I realized you had swapped positions for the Yankees.

They're just screenshots from Savant which orders them depending on usage

I liked Williams - he was obviously fantastic most days - but the thing that always made me nervous about him was that if his changeup wasn't on point, he was going to struggle. He didn't have anything else to fall back on. His fastball was underrated, but its effectiveness relied on the airbender.

The days his changeup was bad, you could just feel him praying that it would end up in the strike zone and that nobody would square up the fastball.

Devin Williams gives up 3 in 10th for another Yankees loss - ESPN

I don't know what has happened to him.  He threw a batting practice changeup waist high to give up the homer.  The Yankees have so much talent, but it seems like either the culture, coaching, or the environment of being in New York drags them down.  Crazy.

It's almost unbelievable that just 4 months ago his FA projection was maybe 4/$80m or so, he's healthy, and he's now probably 1/$5m or 2/$15m.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

You only have to go back like 2 years to see Durbin, Lockridge, Seigler, and Perkins in a Yankees jersey.

Devin’s postgame interview is sad. I really feel for the guy. Not everyone is a good fit for New York 🤷‍♂️

I have a theory about that. Teams that can buy ready made talent don't spend as much time and effort refining the support staff necessary to make average players great.

Why spend a bunch of time and effort learning the exact best way for each pitcher to pitch each pitch when you can just buy the best pitchers? They never have to figure out how to make a player with average stuff better than average or how to make a player with one great trait effective because they can buy players who have all the tools or can figure it out on their own. When they can't, they just eat the money and find one that can. In a nutshell, teams forced to make do with what they have learn to make do with what they have. The ones who can just throw money at it just throw money at it.
