Brewers acquire Trevor Rosenthal

I don't get it, do we control him next year as well? He was a good arm and but he won't be ready until September. So we traded Peter's for what like 5 to 10 innings of a questionable. There has to be more to this.

If we had signed him, we'd have saved a top 20 prospect. Are those inconsequential?

Stearns is embarrassing himself.

If we'd signed Juan Soto out of the Dominican Republican we'd be sitting pretty too.

He's an extremely good reliever. If he was healthy he'd have been asking for $45 million.

He's just 5.7 WAR for his career, and he's only been good for half a season since 2017.

Peters has predominantly played LF with a handful of innings at RF and had yet to make the transition to AA.  If he's limited defensively to LF, there won't be an opening at the ML level for a long time and they have an equivalent player in Noah Campbell at AA.

Yup, those 2 things are similar.

Rosenthal innings pitched over the past five seasons:

2018: 0

2019: 15.1

2020: 23.2

2021: 0

2022: 0

August status: unavailable

Mike Brosseau innings pitched over the past five seasons:

2018: 0

2019: 4.0

2020: 0.1

2021: 0

2022: 3.0

August status: available in 7+ run deficits or 10+ run leads

This warranted giving up more than a bag of baseballs? ?

Do you think we could acquire a guy with the upside of an All-Star closer in exchange for a low-level flier who the front office is presumably not very high on if he had pitched 70 IP and led his team to a World Series the year before?

I don't like giving up Peters for potentially 25 innings (very optimistic) of Trevor Rosenthal.

First trade by Stearns that I truly dislike.

90% chance Peters is never a big-league starter (or more), but still don't like this one at all.

The trade deadline is always kind of a mixed bag if you’re a Brewers fan,  The only time we’re in a blockbuster is when we’re sellers.  When we buy, we buy many tiers below the headliners.

But I get a kick out of this:  it is the only time we really get a glimpse into what the people who are in he best position to know anything really think about prospects.  As a fan, and thus someone who otherwise has to rely on the amateur’s rankings, this is the fun part.

If you keep expecting that all the prospects will stay and/or we’ll be in on big name acquisitions, you’re just going to be disappointed.  Stearns doesn’t play that way, at least not at the deadline.

I thought this was a bit of a canny move when I was figuring it was a money/change of scenery guy or second tier ACL infielder deal. Peters feels like a bit much given there is no guarantee when he is going to pitch.

Never thought I would see so much love for Tristan Peters, but then again he was traded for a guy who hasn't pitched since 2020 and was a FA as of 2 weeks ago.

Can anyone remember a deadline deal made my Stearns that was a needle mover?

Brewers might not have made the postseason without Jordan Lyles and Drew Pomeranz in 2019

Mark Attanasio shared with reporters today that after the lockout, the Brewers had "three big names we were hoping for, and we got one in Andrew McCutchen." Regarding some payroll clarity recently w/ player agreements, he said, "We always leave room to do things at midseason."

More than one team is involved in the trade.

Sure, but you know what does get things over the finish line?? Making a team an offer they can't refuse.

my hunch is they were in on Bell and the Padres decided to go for broke

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Well, freeing up salary in the Hader trade is technically “doing things at midseason.”
