Doesn’t hurt to get something back if the team was declining the option year. Looks like that’s what happened. Never know if one of those minor league relievers can turn into a serviceable MLB bullpen arm. Get Holub in the lab this Winter and Spring to see.

Similar to the Wong trade last year but fortunately don't take a bad contract in return. Canha certainly proved me wrong with his production here but still not a believer in him.

I would have been fine with keeping Canha as a first base option but I'd prefer this to keeping him or paying him 2 million and not have him at all.

Just noticed he doesn't need to be added to the 40 man roster either. That makes it even better.

Good move, Holub looks really rae for 25 (2 way in college) He doesn't look to get a lot of extension for a 6'6" guy. Should be a guy our staff can get up a few mph work on accuracy.

I still worry about the front office being cheap this offseason. Canha as a primary 1B probably isn't the best defensively and we don't really need him in the OF.

Canha is 34 and played over his head offensively after the trade. I'm ok trying to fill 1st base another way.

So I'm assuming this means the Tigers are going to pay Canha to play with them in 2024?

This move appears that the Brewers are going to go the rebuild route, with 1st base still an open position.

The team has stated they have zero (0) desire to rebuild. And with the infrastructure, farm, young core and ridiculous bullpen this team has I can see why.

With Yelich, Taylor, Frelick, Mitchell, and hopefully Wiemer figures his swing out this off-season, it's fine to spin Canha for something. I think we (often) get super attached really quickly to guys who perform for short periods at high levels, and while Canha's certainly not bad, and his OBP has been nothing if not consistent, I'm fine with them moving on.

Is anyone surprised that this is just another penny pinching move by the Brewers? If you aren't willing to pick up $11.5 million on an option for Canha, to me that speaks volumes. Going to be another season of going cheap for the Crew obviously. Wait for all the 1 year FA deals that will be incoming. Also, whenever they make a deal like this(acquire a minor leaguer) why do they always insist on getting Pitching back? How about just once getting for a decent, potentially higher upside bat back?

Because "1B is still an open position" a few days into the offseason the Brewers are definitely going the rebuild route? What?

We need power at 1B and throughout the rest of the lineup. Canha is going to be 35. He isn't suddenly going to start hitting 20+ HRs.

Take the upside relief arm and move forward.

I fully expect this team to cut payroll this offseason and don't like it but Canha was definitely not worth 11.5 million for this team regardless.

Honestly, in this case at the level of prospect involved, the pitcher has the clearer path to being a big league contributor. If you want an offensive prospect with upside at this prospect level, you are best case getting another team’s Jhonny Severino, a toolsy, far from the big leagues hitter with question marks.

They probably have a deal for Santana at 5 million for one year which is a better move than paying Canha 11.5.

Santana is probably ideal at 1st if we aren't going to get a big name. Top notch defense and a passable bat. On top of that he is a switch hitter so we could give Yeli or Black some games there the 1st half and maybe get someone like Wilken some time at the end of the year. Basically he could platoon either handed or be a top notch PH if a young guy passes him up.

Combination of a player who is expected to regress to his norm and not risking capital on a 35 year old.  As well as he played last year, that’s not how this group is going to allocate resources lest they get in a bind financially.

Hopefully they move on from Winker and Tellez.  No brainer to do so.

I missed my lone chance to see Holub face the T-Rats when he was called up to Double-A Erie on June 6th. They played Game 1 of their 5 game series (game 6 was cancelled) that same day! 🥲 By every measure Holub made fantastic strides in 2023 and hit the ground running in Erie. It will be fun to watch him in 2024.

Brewers set a franchise record for opening day payroll in 2022.

By the time the various in-season and deadline deals were accounted for, Spotrac had their year end payroll a couple million higher in 2023 than it was to end 2022.

As long as the money is re-allocated elsewhere over the next five months, no pennies were pinched in this transaction.
