Are we just trying to be cute and outsmart other teams?

Man, did anyone, anywhere see that coming?

Didn’t expect that pick.

I predicted that. 😂

Somebody will still be around at 33, but it looks like stacking talent later is the way it's going to go.  Not as fun for casual fans, but might be smart.  Cooper Pratt is as highly ranked as Brock Wilken right now.

CBS Sports:

Braylon Payne, OF, Elkins HS (TX): Payne has an angular frame and some exciting power and speed tools. He's going to require some serious development time and instruction in order to maximize those traits, however.

I hope they're trying to outsmart other teams.

Let the outrage commence in 3…2…1…

Let’s wait until the end of the night. They will get an overslot guy

From Fangraphs: Premier athlete with wide receiver's build at a strapping 6-foot-2. Plus-plus runner, reaches top speed in just a couple of strides. Downward cutting swing looks awkward a lot of the time, makes slash-and-dash contact in games. Has more power potential than that but his top hand needs to be more involved in his swing to get to it. Power/speed developmental prospect whose wheels are a fit in center field.

So, really fast version of Hendry Mendez?

Great athlete, brewers clearly think they can develop him

This has to indicate a heavily HS draft class. That rookie ball team next year is gonna be STACKED.

If we offer him 34 pick money, we are looking at $2 mil in savings there alone.

This kid better be signing for something like 2 million under slot to use on better players because its an absolutely brutal first round pick.

No doubt.

The Brewers front office knows way more than I do, so I’m just going to sit back and enjoy.

Some of the big money guys were later last year.

Just when I thought we were gonna take our usual college hitter, the FO throws a curveball. I have to imagine this is more of an underslot lottery ticket to enable us to swing for the fences later.

It's better than Corey Ray or Eric Brown

I don't mind this pick at all. There is definitely upside, mlb draft rankings are very subjective especially comparing HS guys to each other or college bats. He his a premium athlete who has potential to add strength/power, be a demon on the base paths and play high end defense. At 17 he is 4 years younger than some of the college bats.

On top of it our scouting director Johnson alluded that they didn't see much difference between player ranked from 11-50 or so. This probably allows us to get 4 or 5 players in the 60 or 70.

My guess is that we can probably save as much as 1.5-2 million on slot value and make a couple big picks later.

Totally reminiscent of those two picks. Yuck is all I can say.

Are there any examples of the Brewers going totally off the board in the early rounds and it working out because I can't think of any.
