Could be another under-slot pick.  Burke was #65 on MLB.com.

They're buying down some HS players to their later picks.  That's the only thing I can think of.

I'm always skeptical of Tennessee hitters because of the short porch at their home field, but he did lead the NCAA with 30 doubles.  Just turned 21 a month ago.

Can’t say I know anything about Payne but if he’s got a superior hit tool, it could work.  I think they wanted to add prospects on the younger side since we have so many young MLBers to space it out.  I liked Benge but maybe all he is a Hunter Renfroe who was drafted around the same area if memory serves.

I am a huge Tod Johnson fan.  This is a guy who gives us an edge after a decade of lackluster drafting.  The way he played it in 2023 gives him a lot of credibility for the strategy right now.

I hope we do well here next since this will finalize the Burnes package.  I hope we get a top prospect to enhance that trade when we look back on it.

It' unfortunate that the scouting and player development teams have no clue what they are doing.

Orioles take Griff O’Ferrall #32.

I was going to say that's a weird pick because they typically love big EV bats but they also drafted Bradfield in the 1st last year.

I like Burke a lot as well, not only 20 HR but 30 2B. Underrated athlecism with 11 sb and also a just turned 21. He should get to high A ball by year end and have a shot to be in AA next year.

Another pick that should save us some money since he was ranked around 60.

All we hear is this pick and that pick will save us money but until we actually pick someone ranked higher than our slot its all talk. They can still change things up and pick a few unsignable guys but if this is the best we do this is one horrifyingly disappointing draft.

I feel like our wheelhouse as an organization is drafting and developing arms. Interesting that there wasn't one picked with the first 2 picks. Not to mention the 2 picks taken were pretty large reaches. Interested to see how creative they get with hard to sign guys. Not ideal value so far though. Burke is a fun player at least light tower power.

They're two picks into the draft with two more left tonight alone.....

Brewers spent down to the final penny of their allotted pool last year.

Each teams draft pool is predetermined by MLB based on the number and position of their selections

Pretty sure the Brewers have spent their draft pool every year since the system was instituted.

The Major League roster is a whole different line item.

So there's a new CBA rule that if you get an MLB draft physical that you are guaranteed 3/4 slot which would mean Payne is guaranteed $3.4M...makes that pick feel a lot weirder to me.

Have to imagine we're going to get a wave of overslot guys throughout 2-10. Strategy could end up looking brilliant a year or two from now. Who knows. *shrugs*
