Ernie Banks. Played 1953-1971, two MVP awards, 11 All-Star games and never even played in a playoff game.

Also, Fergie Jenkins and Ron Santo (Cubs trend here).

Imagine in today’s sports crazed world having 4(!) Hall of Famers (Banks, Williams, Santo, Jenkins) together on the same team for multiple seasons and never make the playoffs. The sports talk outrage machine would’ve melted down innumerable times.

This has nothing to do with uniform standards and everything to do with Doug eddings letting his inner racist out.  Good on marmol for sticking up for the kid.

I'd have a lot more sympathy if it happened to any other team. A team that tried to enforce unwritten rules and playing the game "the right way" via bean balls and getting in to fights does not get to complain when it happens to them. They just didn't just didn't like having the same lessons of being classy that they forced on other to be forced onto them.

An umpire, ANY umpire, has one job. To uphold the rules of the game as they apply to that particular match-up. Opinions don't really have a place in situations where uniform code is in place. 

 

Add Eddings to the list of power trippers to fill the void of Angel Hernandez and Joe West, IMO.

This feels like a boomer thing with the hats.  Can’t wait for all the boomer umpires to finally be gone.  Would also like for the boomers to let go of sports at some point also with the no celebrating “act like of you been there before” nonsense.  This is a child’s sport played by adults.  Fun is allowed and celebrating is also allowed.

Sorry had to rant on this for the billionth time.

Eddings is only 57. I mean older Gen X can be boomer like, but I go with he's just an ass.

Besides to sell merchandise why wear hats at all anymore as part of the uniform? Most the games have been at night for 40+ years

This was the name I was searching for but couldn't come up with it without cheating.

This St. Louis pitcher is far from the first guy with his hat crooked. I've seen Sonny Gray with a seriously crooked hat and like half his jersey buttoned. Why doesn't anyone say anything to him?

Doug Eddings might want to get his affairs in order because this is going to follow him, especially with the player saying they never told him to ask the pitcher to correct it. What a dope.

Many people these days have no idea that “even playing in a playoff game” was much more difficult in an era when only two teams, and then only four, made the playoffs every year.

Yeah, there have been several Brewers teams in the past that were at least as good as these Brewers teams of the past couple years (probably better) that missed the playoffs because of this.

Just checked the AL playoff picture for the first time in a while. The Guardians and White Sox are in volatile spots - only a half game separates them for the Central crown, and the winner could get the 2-seed and the first round bye (Astros are currently the 3-seed, also a half game behind Chicago). The loser between those two would be the 6 seed, but possibly out altogether because the pursuers for that spot are only 2 or 3 back right now. 

It’s possible that the AL East gets 4 teams in, with all having better records than the 2-seed.

I have to say, as a Brewers fan who has put up with living among Cardinals fans for almost 20 years now, that I’m very happy the Cardinals  have become a different kind of team. Mármol likes to provoke conflict, and that’s annoying. But the whole “Cardinal way“ thing seems to have receded into humility. The present team is young and hungry. I can’t think of any of their players who irritate me, although they’re young and have plenty of time to ingratiate themselves. Seeing how they reacted to this made me happy for the team, their fans, and the rest of us.

I first started noticing baseball in 1977 and became a full-fledged fan just in time for the first great run of Brewers success in the late 70s and early 80s. IMHO there hasn’t been a better Brewers team than this one, ever. At one time or another, we’ve had better players at just about every position, but these teams over the past few years have been the most complete Brewers teams I’ve ever seen, and they keep refining the formula. There’s a reason they’re likely to break the franchise record for wins for a second straight year.
