Really interesting article. It certainly paints Counsell in a more favorable light than Stearns.

The Counsell comments about team identity are interesting. The Brewers have an extremely strong and coherent identity and they also have strong buy in from the fanbase It has taken the better part of 10 years for us to achieve that.

One start doesn't erase what he was until then nor mean he's not going to struggle to go longer again.

It wasn't one start.  It was his third start of that type of quality:

4/16/26 - @TOR - 6.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

6/10/26 - @ATH (at Las Vegas) - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

6/23/26 - @CIN - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K

All three on the road.  All three either tough offenses or tough ballparks to pitch in.

The talent is there.  It just needs to be unlocked consistently.  At not quite 25 years old yet, I think he's far from a fully-developed pitcher.

I don't think it changes anything you said, but he's 25 and turns 26 in September.

So we are getting David Peterson this weekend.

Peterson this year is 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 16 appearances including 8 starts.

Cubs sending their #13 prospect Cole Mathis to NY.

Cubs equivalent of trading for Jake Woodford.

You have to overpay this far before the trade deadline.

I never disputed his talent. Just that for the majority of the season so far he had trouble going through the order more than once.

I think my point got lost in that even if he never reached his potential and never was more than an innings eating middle reliever he still would provide more for the brewers than one season on Peralta. I'm not saying he never will be more than that. Just that even if he wasn't it would still be a worthwhile trade. Not the best possible trade. Just that we got more value for our team than we gave up.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Mets defense has really killed Peterson…….his FIP is 3.85

Gets lots of ground balls

Yes, I never heard of Woodford before the trade but I know Peterson, supposed to be like the #2 guy in Mets rotation. Seems like good trade for the Cubs not knowing anything about prospect. If he gets it together I think he has one more arby year?

He's a FA at the end of the year

Mets fire Mendoza. Stearns' seat can't be any hotter. What a dumpster fire over there and I'm all for it.

Durbin has been red hot for a little bit now, happy for him.

He has had a great June, by far his best month in his career.

Hopefully this means the Red Sox will keep taking our calls...

Yeah many fans are calling for his head. The Mendoza firing was obviously just a sacrifice to appease the fans. I think Stearns gets at least 1.5 years though. I am not sure they will tolerate another losing season.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

What are they going to do, let Stearns hire a manager who will have more job security than he does? With a roster full of stars and an owner who expects to win, they’re not gonna be out looking for a Tony Vitello type who might take a two year deal.

I think it’s fair to criticize Stearns’  longterm vision in New York. Committing what will be 170 million dollars to Polanco, Semien and Bichette, while letting Alonso go were poor decisions.

I thought Stearns was going to be alright, but now that they fired Mendoza, Stearns  is probably hanging on until the end of the season only because of the draft and trade deadline are right around the corner.

If having lots of money like the Mets means we're spending it on washed-up (or soon-to-be) FAs as opposed to our international scouting department, draft research, analytics team, pitching lab in AZ... I guess I'll take the status quo.

Just sucks that the Dodgers are about as well-run as we are, but can also write blank checks every offseason.  That's an enormous advantage, whether Dave Roberts and their fans want to admit it or not.

I’m pretty sure that Cubs fans want Craig Counsell out of town. I’m sure that Stearns would like to bring him over to the Mets. Wouldn’t that be funny!

And if that happened, hoooo would be next? They tried CC, Trebelhorn, Sveum, Jim Lefebvre who were all on the Brewers' payroll & all at least briefly managed here.

Kenny Macha? He seems a little Madden-ish.
