Yeah, people crucified Boras for not getting more for Bellinger (and others), but as usual Boras has the last laugh. It is Hoyer who has the egg on his face being into the luxury tax and  owing Bellinger (.275/.333/.426) 58 million dollars for the next 2 seasons

No people crucified Boras because it was reported multiple of his clients turned down more guaranteed term and money and got stuck with short term deals with more AAV. Montgomery is rumored to have fired Boras over this. Boras won't get the last laugh when Bellinger ends up making less over the next half decade because he didn't sign a longer-term deal last offseason.

If it isn't a big cost then it's also not much luxury tax relief.

How far over the threshold are the Cubs?

Looks like Wilson Contreras is back on the IL again after breaking his middle finger on another HBP. Probably done for the season. Breaks my heart.

Last time he went on the IL, the Cardinals went 24-16.

So... The Cubs. 29-18 since their low point on 7/3. Scoring a ton of runs.

Not loving this. Still would take a pretty substantial collapse for the Brewers to lose the Central. But I'm not in love with the idea of a neutral site 3-6 matchup.

I just hate the thought of anything good happening for chicago.

I'm not fretting over Atlanta losing the 6th seed. The Braves have stabilized since we swept them and haven't even lost any ground to the Cubs over the past 10 days.

Cubs also have to catch the Mets...harder to be chasing two teams. The next week probably tells the tale on their season. If they get out these next 8 (Skenes plus 6 versus the Yankees and Dodgers) still only back 2 or 3, they'll be right there and probably feeling good. If they're 4 or 5 back and chasing multiple teams, though, that's going to be tough.

Mets are sneaky, sneaky hanging in there and may end up just staying in Milwaukee for six games since they close out their season at AmFam. I'll hope we clinch the bye, though.

Bryan Reynolds game-tying "Willy" (that's my term for a three-run homer) would have only been a homer in one park. Wrigley. That's a shame.

Because the Cubs made a run in August, they couldn't get away with dumping salary to get under the luxury tax threshold, but they will still most likely miss the playoff anyway. Just fantastic.

They actually tried, but likely due to what those players were still owed nobody put in a claim for  Drew Smyly (remaining % of 8.5 million salary + 2.5 million dollar buy out of ‘25 mutual option) David Bote (remaining % of 5.5 million + 1.5 million buyout on options) or Hector Neris. (Remaining % of 9 million)

With the Cubs loss today they are technically eliminated from playoff contention. The most wins the Cubs can finish the season with is 86. The Mets currently have 85 wins and the Braves 83 wins. Those teams still have 3 games together meaning it either guarantees the Mets or Braves reach 86 wins and eliminate the Cubs because they have the tiebreaker.

And with the Mets win just now the Cubs are officially eliminated from the playoff race

They managed to get eliminated earlier this season than last. Craigtember at it's best.

I am not sure a different manager is going to do all that much for the Reds.  EDLC is not a SS IMHO and should be moved to the OF.  India is not an IF and should be moved to the OF.  India being a poor defensive IF is the reason why the Reds have been having a hard time finding a trade partner as the other teams see India as an OF/DH type which brings his value down and the Reds want the trade value as though he is a IF.

To be honest they probably need to get rid of their GM or move on from some of their players like India and get what they can in return.  They need an OF badly.  They could have fixed that this year by moving EDLC to the OF.  EDLC would be better defensively in CF or RF than he is at SS.

Dysfunction junction what’s your function?

Amazing how much flak Attanasio catches from some Brewers fans when the NLC has two legit bottom half dozen or so owners in the entire sport (Castellini & Nutting) showing them how bad things could easily be round these parts.
